Just wondering everyone elses personal opinions on organising your music whilst djing. Does it make it easier to arrange every genre/artist you have in own specific folder, or just every tune you have into one whole massive folder?

What's easier for you?

I don't DJ myself, but my collection usually consist of the genre of music, ie: House/DnB/Soul etc then inside those folders are the albums which relate to the genre.

I like Foobar2000 as my music player as you can set up music playlists in different ways like this and it's quite minimal and works well.

P.S did you still need that WaW key?

Don't use one massive folder, you will find you end up trawling through hundreds of tracks causing you to be disjointed from the crowd your playing to, you need to have a good idea one what sort of set you will be playing first so make up sets before hand and have a couple of tracks on the side to grab if need be.

I don't dj either but my music is set up using artist folders then album folders which then house the individual songs inside it.
All the songs are properly tagged so genre etc can be picked in something like foobar too.

You can then make playlists etc ready for events.

Obviously mine is a bit more diverse than a dj set but the same idea would likely work for a dj too in my opinion.

Normally run everything through 'Mixed In Key' to find stuff in and around the same key/tempo and then just set up a well rehearsed playlist in Traktor with tracks that phrase match well.

Fair enough, I mainly have glitch/dnb/dubstep/liquid, that i arrange in seperate folders..in the same genre..of the one artist. And yes I do lol, message me on steam

Folders, oh the luxury. All organised in boxes, lots of boxes (7" & 12") and such fun transporting it all around. The days when playlists didn't exist were so much fun. :p

Main folder for Year
Main Genre folder
Personal sub-genre folder
All tracks with MixedInKey key at the start of the filename

As examples:

2015\Trance\Progressive Trance\8B - Eimear - It's Alright
2015\House\Trancey Prog\9B - Mango & Andre Frauenstein - Away From Here (Dub)

Folder by year, then by month. Then it's by release, whether that's single / album / compilation or whatever.

To be honest though, I don't play out or anything, but I get bored if I'm not playing something new. So that way I can keep it to tracks bought that month at least.

My vinyl is sorted out simply alphabetically by artist just now. I should sub sort it into genre or something from there, but I don't really have the time.

I have all my cds backed up into separate folders which I have made of whatever I have wanted to play at that time. In my cd wallet I have all bpm written down and tracks in order of bpm so I can find the type of track Im looking for fast.
