Prefer the shape/look of the newer Meganes personally - Might be worth trying to stretch the budget:

Also bear in mind that whilst you are saving on Fuel, that's is only part of the running cost, things like tyres on the RS Megane are more expensive than your 172 (£115 vs £75/corner)
I do very much like the shape and how the Meganes drive, my wife has a 1.5DCI megane. Very comfy..
i do like megans a lot. Might be because i have driven one for the last 7 years (wifes 1.5dci)... and never had any issues with my back and how it drives..
Its not all about saving money wesley, i want a change, and i want a car thats newer, somewhere i can drive to work in that wont hurt my back on every bump. (broke it 2 years ago)
you obviously decided you want to change the car.
But a 1.5DCI is not a Renaultsport 175? The suspension is lower and harder as you surely know form the Clio - something which you said:
I get that you want a newer car, but if that's all you want then why buy a generation old Megane rather than the newer shape one?
^ Pretty much sums up this thread (but you had already decided and just needed to self justify it)
GO have a drive of a 2.2 diseasel Type S civic mate, or a EX (5 door)
A few hundred quid for a remap and you're lookin at the high end of 180bhp

Hey all.
I have been able to raise my budget to 8k.
This is by a loan from a family member, but the stipulation is that it needs to be less than 5 year old and be less miles the better.
I'm struggling to find something that fits the bill!
I'll keep recommending these... hehe

Will head on up to 200k miles before you need to do much to it...
Try this autotrader search... under 8s to 60, over 40mpg, under 5 years, under 100k miles, 2-2.5l engine and vaguely in your area:

200bhp:

Otherwise, you could always head for a nice straight 6 within your budget
This one is perhaps too high mileage for your taste, albeit these will happily keep going past 200k and beyond... mine is on 205k at the moment and bought it at a similar mileage:

200bhp 3.0l straight 6 diesel:

its £8k and had 32k miles so not a high miles car and is only a 2011 model.
Hopefully on sunday its mine if they reduce the price by £300
If you can't manage to get £300 off an £8k car then I don't know what to say.
