R9 Fury X Or R9 390X For Oculus Rift..?

Hello everyone! I'm going to be building a machine for VR-O-Vision in November. I'm going to be doing it in two parts. The main rig in November where I'll be using the on-board GPU until May next year. In May next year I'll be adding either a Radeon R9 Fury X or a Radeon R9 390X. Here's the rest of the parts:

Intel Core i7 i7-4790K CPU (Quad Core 4GHz, Socket H3 LGA-1150)
Noctua NH-D15 CPU Cooler
Gigabyte GA-Z97X-Gaming 3 Socket 1150 VGA DVI HDMI 8 Channel Audio ATX Motherboard
HyperX FURY Series 16GB (2x 8GB) DDR3 1866MHz CL10 DIMM Memory Module Kit - Black
Cooler Master SGC-5000W-KWN1 Stryker "USB 3.0, Side Window Panel, Full Tower Case" White with White LED
EVGA Super NOVA G2 850W PSU
Kingston Technology 120GB Solid State Drive 2.5-inch V300 SATA 3

Most of my gaming is going to be done on my 1080p telly via HDMI and on my Oculus Rift HMD once I get it in November next year. I've gone for an 850W power supply because I may want to get a second GPU and Crossfire it some time in the future.

Now for the GPU part of things. I'm not too sure whether to go for a Radeon R9 Fury X or a Radeon R9 390X. As far as I understand things the Fury X shines when doing 4K stuff and the 390X will be better at 1080P. But the resolution for the Oculus Rift is 2160 x 1200 which is kind of slap bang in the middle lol

Now a 4K GPU may come in handy when the price of 4K tellies comes down to a decent (£300ish) price in a few years which is why I'm veering towards the Fury X. I'm looking at this machine lasting me 5-7 years.

So which would be my best bet..? The Fury X or the 390X..?

Many thanks in advance for any help! :D

Its not really about pure GPU grunt between the two. The GCN 1.2 (Tonga, and Fiji) cards have the fine grain preemption which needed to support VR without hiccups.

As mentioned it's too soon to make decisions on what you want, For VR Fiji is the better option. However you mention having an 850 watt psu the same as me, I'm concerned I need to get a 100 watt too be 100% double Fiji safe, Or Grenada, I bought my TX850 before Hawaii released so then it would have only needed to run either a pair of 680's or 7970's at most but now although an 850 watt should manage 2 x Fiji it's not ideal and it needs to be a top quality one. AMD quote Fiji as requiring 500 watts and Grenada/Hawaii as requiring 600 watts.

My rig pulls 860w from the wall. If that helps you :)

Thanks, Hopefully it helps the OP'er, That tells us that an 850 watt psu isn't suitable for a pair of Fiji's or the more power hungry Hawaii/Grenada chips. It may manage to run it but it's a risk that's not worth taking. I learnt my lesson over skimping on the psu several years back.

860W at the wall is about 730-760 on the PSU side, it would be fine if its a decent 850WW, evga power supplies are supposed to be good ones iirc

I would wait for Oculus Rift to be available and decide then, if AMD are still in business they are sure to have something better available for Oculus Rift. NVidia could actually be the better option by the time it is out as well.

8GB VRAM will probably be standard by November next year as well.

Okay, thanks everyone. I'm going to change my EVGA 850W power supply to a Corsair 1000W one I think. My current machine has a Corsair power supply and I've practically run it 24/7 without a problem so I reckon I should be safe with that.

Will also wait and see what's available in November but I'm definitely getting a Fury X over a 390X if there's a choice between the two in May. Whether I get the next future GPU in the line depends on what's available in May and how the prices are. I should have around 575 to play with I think, and I'll be able to get 10-15% off the price from the Bespoke website too.

Looks like RAM is going up again which is a bit of a bugger but as long as it doesn't go up by more than 70 quid between now and November all should be good.

If you go Corsair make sure it's one of those with the 100% All Japanese 105°C capacitors:

I've read about a lot of troubles with the others. For example go for RMi not RM.

(I've been reading up on psu's a bit recently as I plan on replacing my Corsair TX850 v2)
