Strange new trend?

I got shunned and an official warning on a Fiesta FB page for saying stretched tyres are illegal and look stupid... Damn kids these days.

I hope there's a special Hell for Dubbers, stancers, rat look fans and these time attack numpties.

I think that's a bit of a sweeping statement. There's a big difference between someone being a "Dubber" (i.e. in the VW scene) and stancer (someone just modding the stance of their car) to someone going to illegal lengths to modify their car.

So if you get a flat tyre and you put your space saver on then before you can drive you have to notify your insurance that you've modded your wheels ?

That makes sense !!

Yeah, the same as when you change the tyres or replace your brake pads with non-OEM stuff

isn't the space saver provided with the car and is part of the manufacturer's spec? whereas changing from 17" to 18" alloys or 205/45/18 to 225/40/18 is a change from what was supplied with the car. yes it's dumb.

Equally changing from run flats to normal tyres (or vice versa) can invalidate insurance (as the car, and its suspension, is either designed for run flats or not). Wasn't there some hoo-har a couple years ago about winter tyres affecting insurance and on the back of it most insurance companies announced they're happy for winter tyres to be fitted (as long as they're the same size), but still some needed to be informed as a mod?

They argue that changing alloys makes the car stand out and thus a greater risk for vandalism or theft and changing tyre sizes can potentially impact the vehicles handling/safety. Yes, again, it's dumb, but it's all down to analysts trying to work out some correlation between insurance claims and what's on our cars. (in a similar way some insurance companies regard debadging as a similar mod - try a new compare the market car quote and look through some of the mad "mods" that should be declared if changed from factory spec).
