How to get a Dealer to drop their price?

Tip #1 for negotiating a better price from a dealer: Under no circumstances should you ever leave a deposit before you've agreed on a price. Refundable or not, you need to be completely and utterly detached from the car in question to successfully negotiate. Walking away must be the most likely outcome unless the price you want to pay has been met.

Psychologically to both parties, you have made a commitment to that vehicle by leaving a deposit - even though it is refundable. You've put skin in the game, you're already on the back foot.

Will you get the deposit back if you don't buy the car?

Yep.

if I don't like the tyres or the alloys or the body repair they have done on Sunday I will simply take my 100 and walk away.

but I do kinda want the car as there is none other with that low milage for miles and miles.
Just a shame I only have 8200 cash. And that's it.

Does taxing it come out of that £8200? As you'll need to do that immediately too - something to think about at least.

I never agreed a price. Can't understand why you lots think I have.

You may not have said the words but by leaving a deposit and being concerned about being first, they know you want that car and that you more than likely won't walk for the sake of £500, so they'll be pretty steadfast at that price. What you've done is virtually agree to the price by making it so obvious you want the car. You'll have to be a master negotiator to get money off now, which I suspect you aren't if you're asking here :p

Sounds like I need to try and get some extra stuff thrown in then... like an ac regas or something?

I plan to tax it per month which is around £15 per month. So nothing expensive

Why not ask them to pay for the tax ? Every little helps...

You sure you get your holding deposit back? Otherwise whats the point in the deposit? It's just inconvenience for the dealer to take it off the market only for you to still be able to walk away, if they get nothing for it.

The car is a mazda3 2.2d sport 185 with all the toys.
32k miles 2011 plate.

I want this one based on its lower milage and pristine interior. Plus it's grey and I'm a big fan of grey.

I will see what happens on Sunday, I might try and play hardball.

It may be all my savings, and a family loan (which I will pay back in future) but if it breaks on way home it's all of 7 miles to take it back and I have a 5k credit limit on my credit card which I haven't touched at all. So in case of an emergency I am fine

Personally wouldn't take things too literally with regards to someone spending "all they have" on a car. Presumably he means that is what he has specifically set aside for the purchase, not that the household won't be eating this month because that last £100 needs to be found for a Mazda 3's ved

You might get a token discocunt of £100 or so, or perhaps more likely you'll wait about a month to get your already sunk deposit back, if at all. You absolutely will not be walking away with a significant reduction - not sure what you're not getting about the position you've put yourself in?

Ok I have a plan.

I have just checked and I could get the same car albeit with slightly more miles for 8k.
I'm going to go in, test drive it, inspect the car and if all is good simply say.. "I have 8k, that's payable today and If you accept I will take the car today"
the rest is up to them, if the sales guy refuses I will ask him to go ask his boss because at the end of the day it's the bosses decision. And I think they will accept.

if not I will get my deposit back there and then as promised and walk away and see what happens. If it sells it sells and I will just go further out to buy the car I want. It may be only £500, but it's £500 I could spend in the future removing the dpf and having it mapped if I chose to

The sensible version of that plan would be to go and buy the car priced at £8k - or get a few hundred quid off that one

But that involves going 40 miles away to view a car that may be a dog and spending what ever on fuel. Will only do that if I have too

IMO get a higher mileage one for less money. It's a Mazda tbh so it'll be reliable even at 75k. And you will have like £3k to spend IF it needs it.

Yeah, I would tend to agree there. No point in paying a huge premium for low mileage on a car known for reliability. But to each there own. I once knew a guy thinking of moving on his 350Z because he could tell its done 17k. I was thinking of idiots at the time.

Oh yeah, and 3-4 hour trip to view a car 40 miles away? lol.

Maybe it's because I'm a bit rural, but I've driven 40 miles for fish and chips. Bloody good fish and chips mind...

Don't ask any further details but I drove 320 miles for KFC, saying that I was bored and felt like doing something.

No need, I used to (almost) regularly drive 50 odd miles for a KFC until they opened one up 10 miles away.

I did used to regularly drive 250 miles just because. But then again, fuel was around 70ppl then.
