Moving on from a lease car and I've been looking at an 08 plate Audi A3 1.4 TSFI S Line with 40 thousand miles on it. I'll be doing around 250-300 miles a week with work soon and I was wondering if it would be worth going diesel? I haven't really looked into other options as of yet so I imagine there may be other cars within my budget that are better options.

The sums for petrol/diesel arent hard

16k miles a year at 50mpg and 113ppl is an annual bill of £1602
16k miles a year at 40mpg and 115ppl is an annual bill of £2038

£400 per year or £33 a month.

Diesels are more expensive to buy, so you'll have an older/higher mileage car for your budget and more potential for expensive repair bills.

113p a litre? Has it gone back up in price or something?

There are so many cars of that size out there. If you have the time to do the research and travel to test drive them, then I am sure you can make a good decision.

However, it might be easier to make a list of cars to avoid! £10k is a significant amount of money that should get you something nice, or you could spend less and still get something decent.

I recently bought a 2007 1.8 Civic EX with 46k on the clock for £5k from a dealer for example.

But that's:
a) Not an Audi
b) Not an S-Line
Both of which probably contribute towards the selection of a dated bland hatchback for £10k.

Consider a Golf GT 160 instead if you want a VAG 1.4 TSI, it'll be newer and cheaper.

The GT 160 is supposed to be really unreliable because (I assume) it has a turbo and supercharger. A real shame as it really breeches the gap between the slower (and blander looking) 122ps 1.4 tsi and the GTI which can be difficult to justify (or afford...).
The one thing that the slower tsi has is the 'Match' trim which comes with nice things like DAB, parking sensors and decent size touch screen etc that the GT's rarely have.
Also it is supposed to be on a par with the 1.8 civic performance wise and has loads more torque.
Shame it just looks sooo boring and uses such bland alloys - even the older SE ones are nicer.

The 1.4 TFSI engines can be unreliable from what I've been reading. I think that is part of the reason VW switched back to a 1.8t for the updated Polo GTI.

Anyway you can get something pretty good for 10k. Don't be afraid to go for older models, many are still good.

For a Saloon I'd probably go for a nice Jag :D

For the mileage you would be doing, I would ditch the hatch idea and get yourself a 3 series/A4 type of saloon now you've opened your options, would be a little more comfortable over long distances
