Understanding Energy bills etc

I'm with edf. I give them meter readings every couple of months via their website, and then they just adjust my direct debit based on that.

Very naughty of British Gas for you to be that much in credit, and have that money sat in their bank account gaining interested and not yours. If you owed them £550 you can bet they'd be after you for it!

Call them and ask for it back.

I wish I knew how annd why my bills are around £400 - summer and £550 winter per quarter for gas and electric.

2 adults and 1 child.

Only me in the house in the day and I have 1 PC on for work, that is it.

Ignore the first one, transition related i think

So it says meter reader so does that mean someone came out to check them? If so it shows im reading them properly
Also i suppose they overcharge a bit to cover the more costly time of year?

mine readings seem ok (I think) but I find my bills are higher than any of my friends when I check with them.

£362 of electric used between...23rd June, 4th September, that is only 9.5 weeks, so £38 per week, seems quite high.

Have you tried looking at uswitch to see if you could save?

It's incredibly easy to swap suppliers, takes about 5minutes.

Hi!

We are with british gas and pay a fixed amount of £96 per month. I update my readings when they ask, and have just noticed our account is £550 in credit so obviously we are paying more than we need to be.

Thats fine as they review it in october and i will get it back or can even just ask for it back now. But im wondering how can it be so far out? Am i doing something wrong reading wise? God knows! Had a quick look at the last bill and it doesnt seem like we used enough lol

Not complaining of course, just wondeing if this is normal. Its been our first year in this home, a new build. So i think the £96 a month was just an estimate based on nothing really. Been here 12 months in october.

Wouldnt want to get all the money refunded then one day them say we messed up and require a payment lol

british gas ... I just left them because they upped my prices extortionately. According to my useage I was using half what I was last year, yet I was paying double what I was last year.

this of course all depends on many factors the size of your bill, size of house, kids, who is in the house and when, and the equipment you have and frequency of use etc but on the whole british gas have an area comparison (post code related) which indicates what is used locally.

Electricity is normally around 2 to 4,000 Kwh a year and gas between 10 to 35000 KWh a year. This is what I have seen from relatives and friends bills.

Ace Modder, I don't think 13.51p per electricity unit is particularly a good price especially for a dual fuel account. Check the comparison sites and when you switch always pay by DD in future as it's always cheaper.
I think Moneysaving Expert have some kind of Big Switch going on at the moment, it's also with E.On so might work to your advantage with minimal disruption.

When I was with British Gas they were the pits. They never read my meter, sent out "guestamates" with wildly inflated prices. When I phoned them with the correct readings, they'd send out an adjusted bill based on the spurious one which was impossible to understand. When I moved to Eon (Powergen at the time) BG phoned me up asking why I wanted to leave them! When I said they never read my meter they stated that they had, by law, to read the meter every two years or something. I asked them to check when they had last physically read the meter they had exceeded their time limit by something like two and a half years.

I like Eon's web site. I'm on a fixed tariff. Every time a new tariff is brought in they email me stating there is a new tariff available and will state if I'm better off staying put or changing. They tell me the meter man will be calling soon to read the meter. I then send my own readings irrespective of whether the guy calls or not.

One thing I've noticed with the "Switching Sites", if you enter for example that you are with "BG on Moonbeam Tariff" they might suggest "Eon on Sunspot Tafiff". Close the page, go back and enter that you are on "Eon/Sunspot" and they will almost certainly suggest another tariff, possibly "BG/Moonbeam", so I have little trust in those sites.

I got sick of them always taking more than what I actually used so stopped the direct debit and just pay monthly using the readings I provide.

The dd discount was hardly anything so worth it to avoid the hassle.

I am with SSE now, they prmise to at least half my bill, and I am getting gas aswell soon ( I hope ) just need a gas meter in.

I will be getting the BG call soon, but all I wll say to them is. Im poor and your stealing my money with your disghusting pricing. I always hated that they calculated everything in debit, I would do my best to pay the bills each month but in the end they were upping the prices over and over again, I wouldn't recommend them to my worst enemy.

I have not long switched from Greenstar energy (truly awful company) to GB Energy and my direct debit has dropped to £69 per month. So far my bills are averaging £39 a month so I am building up credit for the winter. I get UK call centre, monthly billing and cheap energy (elec 10.028p/kwh, 0.2550p per day standing charge, Gas 2.940p/kwh, 0.10p per day standing charge. All prices including vat). So far they have been great.

Ive not had an issue with BG really but just wanted to be sure my readings and stuff were normal so i think we are saying they are? Lol

I will see what happens in october when they review our account and usage, and if im still paying over the odds ill move i think

I'm with BG currently (only because I've just moved in) but they have installed a smart meter so I shouldn't have to worry about these over the top estimates.

I'll give it a couple of months to see what my bill is like then switch.

It's probably because they only do a review annually and so you've had that happen. It makes sense to do it every 12 months as energy usage is so seasonal. You should go into credit over summer and then use that credit up in the winter if it has been set properly.

£1,200 a year is about average for energy usage for a family home.

You could probably have asked for a review earlier.
