Hi

I purchased from ocuk shop this morning the i5 6600k and msi z170a gpro bundle

my first question is regarding the motherboard packaging

does the motherboard box come in a polythene wrap or not ?

my main issue is with restarting the computer

the computer will boot into windows fine but when I tell it to restart it wont even show the bios info and just sits there with a black screen

I then have to turn the power off at the back and it boots fine.

I have removed a number of devices from the computer to determine if anything is acting up but nothing so far has made any difference

thanks

tbh im not 100% sure

one of the first things I did after installing the os was to update the bios

but then forgot to pull power cable and clear cmos

I also read there isd a restart bug if you disable onboard sound

however even after resolving these 2 things I still thought it was goosed.

it just seems that after changing a bios setting it takes an age to post, hence the black screen, im talking like 5mins or more, but then after it did eventually post it started restarting fine.

so there we are

You should always put bios to default settings before updating, its the same as clearing cmos really, i have never had to clear cmos after updating a bios before, but glad it worked for you.

thanks

I have just reinstalled my soundcard and disabled onboard sound and the restart issue hasn't re-appeared so It can not of been the sound bug

well it seems I was fooled into thinking everything was sorted

my issue is back

here is a description of what I just did and what happened

I choose to restart computer to go into bios

when the computer was restarting I hit the delete key to enter bios and that's when the screen just sits there black, I have to turn computer off at the psu.

then when it starts up I can now enter bios but after any changes it freezes on save and exit.

I again have to turn off at psu ect

I originally flashed the bios using the msi live update through windows

I have now reflashed the bios back to what it was via the bios and all my issues have gone

NEVER EVER use a Windows utility like MSI Live Update 6 to flash the BIOS.

I think you now know why!

Even on MSI's own forums, it's the first thing they tell you "not" to do.

Use M-FLASH. Never had an issue with this and I've updated the BIOS on my MSI Z170A M7 a couple of times now. Plus used it on previous boards with no issues.

Glad you've got it sorted now.

ok a little more info

As I have mentioned I originally flashed the board from 1.3 to 1.4 using the msi live update utility via windows and experienced all the issues above.

I eventually reflashed it back to 1.3 via m-flash in the bios and resolved all the issues.

So thinking it was the utility to blame I just reflashed the bios back to 1.4 via m-flash and all issues are back

I'm now back on bios version 1.3 which is working perfectly.

so for me and my system 1.4 is broken

So anyone else out there having issues you may want to check this thread

Yes m-flash is on the ez setup screen in bios

my experience with this board so far hasn't been the happiest, however that isn't really the boards fault.

but besides that its an big improvement over my old z68

I have gone from from a asrock z68+i5 2500k to whats it my sig

only reason is, I had half a pc and the wife wanted a desktop to play wow again, so I used this as an excuse to "upgrade"

I went for the cpu/mb bundle on offer as it was only £300 and also 32gb of ddr4 and a new 1300w psu

I can tell the difference between the 2 systems

Yes... Updating the BIOS to the latest and greatest, isn't always the way to go. Sometimes (as you've discovered) it's "suck it and see".

For me, the latest BIOS on the M7 version of this board was the way to go. As it has appeared to improve the stability of the voltage control (among other things).

So... lesson one when flashing the BIOS. Use M-flash from within UEFI.
Lesson two. Always have a backup of your previous BIOS on a USB stick, so that you can easily go back. If needs be with this MSI board, you could always use "flashback" to return to a previous BIOS. Just in case the worse happens and you can't even boot into the BIOS.

Have fun.

The MSI Z170A gaming M7 does not have dual BIOS.
The flashback process can be used if you can't even get into the BIOS.
But obviously if the BIOS chip is FUBR, you are down the creek without a paddle.

I'm assuming you mean the Noctua NH-D14?
In my case I have a Noctua NH-U14S in push pull. Chosen because it's very quiet, cools within a couple of degrees of the bigger dual rad HSFs and is pretty much 100% compatible with every ram module out there.

don't think this board has dual bios

and I'm using a corsair h100i all in one which gives me an idle temp of 17-20c and running heaven with slight oc is 28-30c

lol its in a conservatory

but to be fair atm case temps are 26c and cpu is 17c

its not cold in here as ive modified the conservatory to be less hot in summer and less cold in winter :)
