Advice for this combo

I am going to buying DEFCON 3x - Gigabyte X99-SLI - Intel Core i7 5820K @ 3.80GHz Overclocked Bundle and wanted some info on what card would be best for this.

I am still on a 1080p monitor for now

Budget is around 600 but i am flexible and i play all sorts of games.

Quiet, clocks well, keeps cool. You'll need a 120mm fan mount somewhere in your case for it though.

That's a huge budget for 1080p (IMO). I'd rather get something cheaper, like say a GTX 970, and save up for a new monitor.

With that kind of money the gtx980ti is the best card. I am not sure which is the best but somebody that does is sure to come into the thread.

I assumed the "for now" implied a move up to 1440p/4k soon-ish... I could've interpreted it badly though.

Yup i will be moving to either 1440 or 4k at some point but the main thing i am upgrading for is the oculus rift

Fair enough, if you're going to use it for 1440p then it makes sense.

My only reservation would be if you buy 1440p monitor in say 1-2 years' time, as until then your 980 Ti will have been overpowered (and thus you've spent too much).

Do some research if VR is one of your main reasons for buying a new setup.
Apparently the Occulus guys have some concerns with the current Nvidia cards.

As that Defcon bundle comes with an air cooler you have plenty of fan space options in a 540 for a Hybrid cooled card.

A 390 8GB and a 2560 res 144Hz Freesync monitor can be had for under £600
