My kids laptop video card has just given up.
Time to buy a replacement desktop PC but I don't know anything about what CPU or video card is needed to play games at this lower resolution.
I do not want to end up buying something that's going to be way over powered also how much RAM would I need.

Background they are aged 8 and 9 and at the moment play Minecraft, Lego worlds and Burnout Paradise The Ultimate Box.

I was looking at something based on a CPU LGA1150 Socket & a 350w PSU.
As I think that MB would last & good few years and can take a powerful CPU if needed later on.
I have a old windows XP OS disk is XP to out of date and would I be better just getting a new windows 8-10 OS.

Get your motherboard first. Then buy an OEM key for Win 7 Pro. Cost: under £15. Ties OEM key to mobo. Then get free windows 7 --> 10 upgrade offer from Microsoft before 29th July 2016. And reinstall windows 10 fresh. They could have made it a lot easier for the average Joe. I honestly can't think of any other software which requires so many hoops to jump through.

A 2gb 750 will run off a 350w psu, but that small a PSU is only worth getting if indeed it costs less than a 450w.

Some of the items below could be worth considering. My own kids play similar games, they currently use old LGA 775 hardware, and some of the items below I am considering for a new build.

My boys aged 9 and 11 share a room, they use a 1080p 32" tv for a monitor and tv. I am either going to build them a new PC using some bits I do not need with a G3258 processor or update their old LGA 775 with a Q9550 and 8gb of DDR2.

I could get them a 750ti and am sure it would be great at 1080p, but I have a second 7950 due to not using crossfire at this moment.

That looks good and lucky I can knock £70 off that price as you have listed two cases and I don't need a SSD.
I wanted something that was the same spec as my old gaming PC and that was a
i7 920 with a GTX580 and the system above is faster and will be running at a lower res.
The PSU is fine as they can have my gaming rig as a replacement when its time for me to upgrade.

@dreamcat4 thanks for the tip.

If you can stretch, get the 750 Ti and a 450W PSU. The former because it's much better and the latter because it will give you flexibility.

If you speak to the children's school you may find you qualify for ultra-cheap licenses for Windows and Office.

Going to go for the 750 Ti looked on the GeForce website & it says Minimum System Power 300w.
I already have a spare 350w PSU so its a plus if I can get away with using it.
Do not need flexibility to upgraded as they can have my system when its time for me to upgrade.

What psu is it?
It's the one that comes with the MSI Nightblade case and on the MSI site it says it can power a 750 Ti.

Why not give them it now and build yourself a new beast? ;) hehe
I am so torn with doing this but its going to be a double waste of PC power.
They will have a i7-4790 4Ghz with 16GB of ram & a GTX 780
Running off a 1680x1050 display.

I would end up with this
8Pack Approved - Elite Tier SkyLake Bundle: Intel Core i7-6700K @ 4.50GHz, Asus Z170 Maximum VIII Hero, 16GB DDR4 3000MHz, 256GB NVMe PCI-E M.2 SSD, OcUK Techlabs Extreme 240mm Hydro CPU Cooler
And a GTX980
It would cost me £650 extra I have the funds but its just a waste of funds as I don't game anymore but I do still need the CPU power as I make mods.

Just set up the 1680x1050 display on my PC today to test it as its been in storage for 8 years. loaded up ARMA3 and other games fully maxed and the GPU does not even have to work.

Got to love life when I was 20 I would have killed to be in this position now that I am older I m now saying that its a waste of money :D

Have you considered second hand on the members market? Either cheaper or more power for your money

Just had a look tonight and came away with this little lot.
They now have a more powerful PC then me. Should keep them going for 10 years. money well spent and if anything should fail on there PC or mine I can just swap parts around to find the problem.
