Building my kid an ATX gaming rig.. He's only 9, so no need for anything overkill.

He'll be getting a hand me down 7950 and 8GB of DDR3, SSD, and an ATX case.

So looking for a decent enough best bang for buck, cpu and mobo combo, that'll take the 7950, and the 8GB DDR3 ram

He's a gamer. But not a hardcore one..

I was thinking about a AMD FX-6300 Vishera 6-Core 3.5GHz and GIGABYTE GA-970A-DS3P

Since i'm on a budget.. What do you guys think ?

There have been some very good offerings in the MM the past couple of weeks as people upgrade to Skylake or X99. You need to be quick though as they tend to sell quick.

I would be tempted with a G3258 and cheap Z97 board if you only want new. At least that way you have a future upgrade path and can always drop a k series i5 or i7 in it.

i went ahead and picked him up an Asus Z97-A mobo and i5 4690k, which i may take for myself, and give him my existing i7 2600k and Asus Z77 mobo... Not decided yet.

Seem to be having a few small issues on my existing setup ever since running a mild overclock of 4.4ghz. had it not boot on me and twice lock up while playing a game. Can't be dealing with that TBH.

Even if you reset your 2600k setup to stock it would still be plenty powerfull to drive a 7950 and give your kid a very good gaming rig.
