New Servers

Moar power!

I bet the upgrade from 98 to 2003 was costly. :p ;)
Can't be going too advanced now.

DB is dead;

Lost connection to MySQL server at 'reading initial communication packet', system error: 111

How are they hosted? Do you have physical servers in a dc? Virtual servers or just standard web hosting ?

Highly doubt it'll be standard web hosting with the amount of visits these get :D Will probably be managed by a datacentres team. Time for a forum software upgrade :)

My ISPs DNS hasn't caught up yet. The three seconds required to point to a different DNS server is just too much effort for a Sunday morning though!

This Forum theme/software is fine a lot of the newer Forum do bring some features that are nice but a lot of them bring Bloat or Flashy crap that makes it slower to browse.

I agree on that side of things, but Xen isn't too bad at all. Nothing as bad as the latest versions of vBulletin anyway.

Good news it the forums are now mega quick. Just changed my DNS to Google on the router and all working normally now too.

90% of that can be disabled and is usually added on by idiot admins. Things like auto resizing images would be ace.

The datacentre team would be vague, data centres could be massive, and have multiple providers hosting inside them. Would be cool to see how its setup though.

Would imagine they go via a cloud/hosting provider who possibly run the web servers as part of virtual web server cluster for the shop and what ever for for the forums.

Because of the traffic they would be I assume load balanced

What I mean is I reckon they might rent a rack in a datacentre which is managed by the datacentres team :)

If they have colo space and its non managed, usually it would be up to ocuk to sort or get someone to sortie they would ask for access and go do it themselves, or do it remotely

If they have managed services then it would be dealt with by the managed service cloud hosting provider in most cases

Mine just pinged. Woohoo! Looking forward to OcUK 3.0 now: Underboss pay rises, refreshed post-count, and so on. I still can't believe Caseking managed to arrange the Hovis-sponsored forum branding.
