Good Cheap Server - HP Proliant Microserver 4 BAY - OWNERS THREAD

JUST SEEN POST ABOVE WITH SAME QUESTION - wasn't there when I started typing!

Me again. Have a "spare" 1TB drive at present in me Gen8 ProLiant Microserver for testing.

Looking to final arrangement. Am thinking currently of:

- 2 x max capacity drives (3TB, 4TB, 6TB - WHAT IS IT??) in RAID 1 (mirrored) for photo back that I don't want to lose.

2 x separate drives in RAID 0 for stuff I don't mid losing - films, general stuff (use older drives - 1 TB - I also have 2 500GB RAIDED (mirrored) drives currently in my soon to be retired DLINK NAS. The stuff on these will be transferred to my new server. these are 8 years old and I am not sure how long drives last?

HP site says max capacity is 4 x 4TB but I have seen reports of 6TB drives running OK. Anybody tested 6GB (or 8GB !!) drives. Can't afford to buy / test!

Thanks, Mel

I have 2x Gen8

1 with 4x4TB
1 with 4x6TB

Both work absolutely fine.

There's no hard/soft limit that would stop larger drives either.

The only thing like that was back at the introduction of 3TB drives... but not for larger.

It will only state 4TB on HP site because that's the largest they tested and approved.

I'm not sure to the answer to your question.

However I'm curious... were you aware that these already have 2x gigabite NICs + a third for iLO? Do you need 4?

Thanks for the info about the storage, good to know! Am close to pulling the trigger and ordering one with the current cash back offer but I really do need to know about the PCI issue.

Is anyone using a Gen8 with a gfx card in it? Any issues with the fan speeds?

No issues with fans, using a fanless 5650 by Sapphire in mine to run Plex media centre. Sits happily in the corner of my living room.

I've just taken my N40L to bits, fitted a new SSD, an Asus AMD HD5450 (so I can connect to my TV) installed Windows 7.

Everything perfect apart from one thing - no sound via HDMI

The card is showing as the only device listed in the sound menu, big green tick for default audio. When I right click to test device I get a message which says another device is in control of sound. Nothing else is connected or configured, totally fresh install.

AMD drivers are latest (15.7.1). No yellow exclamation marks in device manager anywhere.

I am missing something obvious? Something in BIOS maybe? I know the N40L doesn't have onboard audio. Seems to be a reasonably common issue so I'll take a punt on the card being ok.

Cheers

Just ordered a gen8. I have a wd red 1tb ready to go in and a Samsung 1tb desktop drive. Was planning on gavingt them run as redundancy as at the moment my storage requirements are low.

I will be following the guidance on getting xpenology running on it to use it as NAS and hopefully plex.

Is there still the bug about having to remove the USB stick after booting to allow the drives to spin down and hibernate? If so, can the USB boot use an external USB or does it have to be the one onboard?

Chuffed at price, but bit anxious about setting it all up!

Oh, also can it be underclocked to reduce power req? Or is that a waste of time?

You can't underclock but you should be able to disable one of the two cores, but it's not really worth it as you will save next to nothing and will make the CPU very gutless.

That is the same setup I have, and it worked straight out the box with no configuring needed so something has gone wrong somewhere.

I have had the odd issue where I needed to pull the HDMI lead out and back in again to get sound but other than that its been fine.

Have you checked your sound is not muted on windows and the TV? (sorry but I have to ask)

Is the application configured to use the default sound device or something specific?

Have you tried a different lead?

Different HDMI port on the TV?

All sorted, right clicked on the device in the sound menu went to properties, the roll back driver was greyed out as it was a fresh install. Truth be told I can't remember on exactly what I clicked on (I think it was the uninstall driver) but whatever it was made it work instantly.

Just pleased it's sorted :D

Does anyone have W10 running on a N40L/N54L? Does it run ok and has all the drivers?

I'm currently using Win7 so tempted to free upgrade....

I'm tempted by a Gen8 but I mainly use the server for Kodi and Plex so not sure its worth the money to upgrade.

Any other OS suggestions welcome as well!

Hoping someone might be able to help me out.

I bought a Gen8 to run Xpenology and installed everything without a hitch but I'm finding it too noisy to run it in my small room. According to iLo the fan is at 10% but i still find the drone of the fan distracting. I dont know if my idea of "very quiet" is different to other peoples or if there's something wrong with it.
