hi guys

just wondering if removing the rear seats, and seat belts, is fine for MOT??

obviouosly, if you had seats but no belts, it would fail, but if there is no seats? they cant test it? sort of thing?

im asking because i recently bought a mk1 2003 plate focus, for £50, non running, with a plan to remove the 170k mileage lump, and drop a yamaha R1 engine in it, with a turbo :D
(yes i have the engine ready, aswell as a T32 turbo)
so will be fully stripping interior, with only driver bucket seat...

cheers

that doesnt matter, aslong as she passes when im done with it :D

also, ive got a wierdo issue with the car...
everything, instrument cluster wise, was perfectly fine..
i removed the dash, to replace a couple of bulbs..
and now when i connect the dash power connector up, the little display that shows mileometer, the green backlight constantly flickers randomly.
even with keys out etc..
Also, now, the central locking locks itself, even when your in it..
just from replacing 1 dash bulb!!!

Interesting project idea, any reason you chose a Focus for a bike engined conversion? I imagine there'll be a lot of work to get it light enough compared to a lot of other donor cars?

Far too heavy for a bike engine conversion. You need to be aiming for 500kg or less to get decent performance and a gearbox and clutch that won't grenade itself.

ahhh, well yes, it is a big job..
but its something different :D

i used to dyno tune engines for a living, for a while, then went on to hand building chassis for kitt cars, such as caterham's etc. so got experience in big projects :D

the wiring loom will be the trickiest.. id like to keep as much of the original car loom as possible, for all electrics of course, but incorperate the wiring loom for the R1 engine, somehow..
big job, wont be starting just yet.. going to focus on getting this old lump out, welding up bits it needs, re-painting etc, work on the chassis first..

and Dogbeath... interesting... my friend has a vauxhall nova saloon, with a turbo charged ZX10R engine, and it goes like **** off a shiney shovel..
but yes, gearbox is an issue..

What kind of power would it be putting out, around the 250bhp mark? Even if its a bit more that won't feel hugely fast in that size of car for the effort involved plus there's all the usual bike engined issues of oil surge, no reverse, needing 9000rpm to just pull away etc.

The £50 asking price probably, but he would need to remove most of the car to get it light enough for the r1 lump

yahh, was the £50 asking price is what it was..Plus, overall, for its age, its a pretty clean car..
i know they are old cars with little value, but ive always liked them..
mine will be sprayed up midnight purple, with white wheels :D

Had a play around today, and now the engine runs, but very lumpy, asthough its missfiring on 1 or 2 cylinders..
probs just the coil pack, as they are common faults for these cars..

Could also be bad HT leads. I had a misfire on my car so I just replaced the coil pack on it only to find out it was a faulty lead. :p

yeah i tested the leads pal, no joy..

well ive had a long hard think about it, and think you guys are right..
Going to sell the R1 engine, and use that cash to dump a ST170 lump into it :D
will be better, and easier, whilst still being a fun project.. :D
