Too much choice, unsure what to get

Hi everyone,

I'm in the market for a second monitor. Mainly for more efficient use of space when I'm working on my homelab for various things but I also game.

Looking at the options I'm completely perplexed as to what to go for.

I don't have the grunt to run games at 4k, but can 4k screens display at 1080p resolution OK? I know its older tech but my current LCD monitor would look terrible unless it was outputting at its "native" resolution.

Ultra widescreen looks interesting, again, would put extra strain on my gpu.

Do I just get another standard 1080p screen and be done with it?

Do I go for g-sync/freesync?

Do I go for 144hz? (even though I wont run a lot of games at 144fps)

For reference, I have a 7970 GPU. It's still OK. I had planned on upgrading but Skylake is a massive disappointment and to be honest, no games have come out recently that's made me think about upgrading.

I guess I'm after a decent "office" use monitor, but something that's decent for gaming as well.

Thanks,

David
