Sorry but gaming monitors are getting ridiculous

If I want a normal 60hz 1440p 27" IPS, I can get one for about £300-£400, but after using 144hz Gsync that has ruined 60hz for me and I cannot go back to that.

The jump from a normal 1440p to an Asus PG279Q is approx double the price, I am thinking of getting a 3440x1440p Gsync screen, because although that is extremely expensive as well, its actually RELATIVELY good value compared to the 144 (165) hz 27" PG279Q. You are getting a 3440x1440 21:9 34" screen for £200 more.

Prices are high atm, yes. But they should hopefully drop over time. IPS 144hz is a relatively new tech, so you're paying an early adopters premium. As for G-Sync, I have no idea. Its way more expensive than freesync, but is it that much better?

Can't believe how good 144Hz+Gsync is tbh! Picked one up yesterday as I couldn't stomach paying 1k for an UW Gsync, and wanted to try Gsync. It's *awesome*

Tbh I don't think I'll be able to go below 144Hz now, so I'll wait 9-12 months for the Z35 Predator to drop to a decent level (the lower res doesn't bother me) :D

I wanted to buy a 1440,IPS,Gsync,144hz screen but the cost scared me away.
However i went with the best alternative ie 1080 144hz gsync and couldnt be happier.
One review in particular stated id only lose 3 inches and 17ppi going for a monitor half the price of an asus rog or acer predator, that was a no brainer to me.

IS 144Hz that good?

I'm by no means a hater but I see no limitations with my PLS 60Hz. In fact I'd rather have a panel that produces nice deep colours than one that traded off such quality for higher refresh rate.

Don't get me wrong, one that can do both (which hopefully we'll see more of in the next 12 months) could well be the ticket!

Now for my stupid question - I currently have a GTX 770 and run my games on Ultra Settings and only periodically see frame rates even close to 60fps - so would a 144Hz monitor not be a waste unless I was to either dial down the settings or buy a new card?

@ GMac11, its the gsync that is the magic aswell as 144hz.

Like you i couldnt possibly imagine anything better than 60hz, for example i have owned a few 2560x1440 and 2560x1080 screens aswell as my current dell U2412 IPS, all 60 hz and lovely colours.
Once i experienced Gsync @ 144hz i was simply blown away and all the fuss ive heard about it truely hit home, it really is something you have to experience to believe it.

Agreed with you. The best thing you can do is never try it. Stick with 60fps until 144Hz Gsync IPS is commonplace.

GMac11 - Maybe it can wait til your next system rebuild? That way prices will have come down. Tbh it sounds like your current sys is doing it for you at present :)

I only switched as I wanted to try it but I also had the graphical power to push it ;)

+1

It's both incredibly subtle but also game changing tbh. Really is the combination of the both. It's how it should have been at the beginning!

I *almost* went with the BenQ XR3501 but once I'd read of its tearing problems I was set on a s/h Swift. Glad I did, as I get to try it out before moving :D

I have been sniffing around the Acer XB270HU just to see what the fuss is about but the price is just too high for what I think I'd gain - plus I would like something that has other inputs. I appreciate the Gsync will only work via DisplayPort but I like to have my Macbook hooked up too and maybe a spare HDMI slot for whatever it may be needed for.

But as I mentioned previously, if my rig isn't capable of putting out 60+ fps is there a need for anything higher than 60Hz? I do understand however that gsync eliminates screen tearing which is certainly no bad thing.

One of the major upsides of Gsync for me is it will also make your rig last longer due to it 'smoothing out' low framerates. A well overclocked 970+Gsync will last a good while imo, even if it isn't hitting the high of highs!!

Nice for older games though where it does...

I miss the days when the only thing you had to worry about was panel type... getting a Viewsonic VX2025WM for £200 and seeing no need to spend more.

Now I have to worry about paying 2 grand for 4K120 IPS when it finally tips up. I doubt inflation covers much of that gap.

I would love to try G-Sync/144Hz but I am afraid if I do that I will actually like it and be stuck, because I don't find 16:9 to be pleasing for games any more.

I was going to sell my U3415W and get the Acer X34, until Acer said that it's actually 60Hz and 100Hz would "be at your own risk", I was put off. I can't overclock my U3415W either as it skips frames, although I'm not sure if I am doing it wrong... I guess >60Hz/G-Sync are going to be a long way away for me.

I've been umm-ing and ah-ing over whether to upgrade my monitor yet recently and I think I've decided not to.

I currently use an old 24 inch TN-panel BenQ 60Hz 1ms £120 (~2010) jobbie. I want to switch to 27" 1440p and have been looking at the AOC Q2770PQU and BenQ GW2765HT. Both are below £300, 1440p, PLS, 27" and 60Hz.

My wallet will hate me but I think I'll wait a bit (maybe January) and buy the ROG Swift PG278Q and hope it's under £500 by then.

I feel people oversell 1440 and undersell 1080.
Afterall there is only 17ppi less in a 24" 1080 than a 27"1440,im no expert but thats marginal to me.
I have owned 1440 screens and i found in terms of pixel density to the naked eye it looked no better than my dell 1200p.

I'm with you on prices.. I want a 3440x1440 curved ultrawide freesync, just those few words means I'm spending near a grand - over twice the cost of a decent 4k freesync despite being less pixels :(

144hz gsync is very good, mainly for games like CS:GO and BF4 etc. for other games 60hz is ok, but only if you can keep it at 60fps Vsync 99% of the time. If you don't want to spend the money on a gsync 144hz, or want larger than 27" 1440p then my suggestion as above, is don't even try it! For example after playing CS:GO on a 144hz gsync monitor, I cannot even be bothered to play it anymore on my 60hz until I get another high HZ monitor. If the PG279Q was £699/700, I think I would just get that, but at £750 its too much.
