removing rear seats MOT legal?

Pretty good work-around for a damaged seatbelt, unless it's the drivers...

nah not a damaged seat belt bud..
im just giving the car a full interior strip..
carpets out, roof felt off, dashboard out, door cards out, gear stick housing out, rear and passenger seats out etc..
try and remove as much weight as possible..

the car is a "fun" car project.. you know, nice weather, quiet back road, sort of car...

its definately not going to be family orientated.. me and my partner both have our own "family cars"... i have a Vauxhall Astra MK6, 1.7 TDI (which i hate, but suprisingly, its cheap on insurance.... im only 26), and my partner has a Volkswagen Golf GT TDI, (my partner is 48.. nahh just kidding, she 29), for family travelling
(5 year old son, and 9 month old daughter)..

This focus project is going to be, more like "track car" sort of work.
engine out, suspension struts, sway bars, wishbones off etc,, basically a strip down to bare chassis..
grind rust off, weld whats needed, re-paint the entire thing, dump an ST170 engine in it, bolt in a bucket seat for driver seat, seal rear doors off and fill, so its a 3 door car. (wont be back seats, so no point in having rear doors).
cable tie dashboard up, fit a couple of guages, like turbo boost guage, a digital turbo timer, etc etc
and have some fun..

basically, its going to be a fully restored, fully weight reduced beast, thats going to be lower than your nanny's nipples :D

An ST170 engine? Well that bike engine idea changed fast..

yeah i know, since you guys didnt recommend it, after a long hard think, i agree'd.. and deciding to sell the R1 engine, and use the cash for a St170 engine instead..

whats wrong with it? its a 2L 16v, along with my turbo i have in the garage, and then had fun with boost controllers, remapping, etc etc, will be kicking out a fair bit of BHP, plenty enough for fun..

they are 173bhp standard, with factory Catted exhaust etc, so couple with a turbo setup correctly, and i will most probs end up camming it and plenty more..
will probs be looking at around 230-250bhp after ive finished tinkering...
230-250bhp in a stripped out chassis, would be pretty nippy...

also, remember.. i need to be able to insure this.. so cant go anything silly like v8 power :D
im only 26 years old, with 6 points on my licence... :(

Need a v8. Might as well buy a st170 for about 600 quid (mate just sold one) and strip that down.

I get that it's point of just doing it but make it more epic. Will be more worth while when your done

oh trust me.. there is nothing i want more, than a stupidly epic build..
but like i said,, im 26 years old, with 6 points on my licence..

so need to find the fine line between power and insurance costs..
because remember, declaring all mods and engine conversion, will bump up the insurance even more...

my astra currently costs me £1100 a year, fully comp, unfortunately i havent got any NCB, as i reversed over the top of my friends 2014 plate motorbike about 6 months ago, so my insurance covered the costs, and said goodbye to my NCB

A friend of my put a cozi engine in a Capri (crazy car) he said if you join the ford owners clubs and ask them which company's to use for insurance you will likely get it cheaper. For 1 they will deal with modified cars and 2 if your in a "club" your the dort that love Ford's.

Now I'm not sure how much of that is true as ice not done it but its worth a shot.

BTW is Capri is 300bhp without a turbo :-D

By the time you've insured a bog standard focus with all the modifications to make it a slightly warmer focus, surely it would be cheaper just to buy a standard ST170

I didn't realise you was adding a turbo, in that case it should be fine...I think I'd be tempted by a Duratec though because then you could use a lot of mk1 RS parts.

Isn't the ST170 engine a lot of work to turbo, compared to the standard 2L zetec, due to the VVT and compression?

I seem to remember it being discussed a lot on the focus owners club when I had my focus.

TOM E - thats it bud.. its more about the fun

JELLYBEARD999 - Yes, apparently it is a bit of a pain to turbo, But its possible..
Lower the compression a little, modify and weld up manifolds etc, then set turbo up

I once sent a car for MOT with the back seats folded down and so much junk in the boot they they couldn't have folded them up. It just came back with an advisory.
