Ah dammit posted too soon, waaaaiit...

Ooops - ok this is better.

So I need a decent rain coat to take traveling. I don't need anything thermal. Purely just to help keep dry when the rain kicks in. I want something light weight, packs down to a very small size. I don't want to buy a £1 one which falls apart after 2 uses. But honestly I'm not sure where to look. Have looked in a few high street stores and most of them seem to be all much the same, nothing really inspires confidence.

What say you, travellers from OcUK. Any recommendations?

Thanks!

I'd just go to your nearest cheap sports shop. I picked one up for about 30 squid when I did the Inca trail a few years ago.

I remember buying the Mac in a Sac coat/trousers for Duke of Edinburgh, they are lightweight, very small, inexpensive and they seem to last a decent length of time.

I've got a Montane Minimus waterproof as my backup one that sits in my pack or harness all the time. It packs down tiny so I don't even notice it and it's lasted me a few years use so far around the UK and in the Alps.

I have a Berghaus 3 in 1 rg gamma long:

It comes with a fleece inner but this is removable so it works for cold and warm situations. I think you may be able to get the jacket without the inner but couldn't find the option on the site. *Edit* found it:

They ain't cheap but it really does keep you dry.

I've got their Cornice jacket but these are probably not lightweight enough for him.

I'd pop into a Millets or Blacks and see what they have.

Thanks for the recommendations :)

£120 is pretty expensive...I'll have a think about it. Another friend just recommended Regatta stuff.

The montane sounds good - will check it out :)

Bought a mac in a sac for my daughter and I was very impressed.

That Peter Storm one a couple of posts above looks pretty good.

Moutain Warehouse can have some good items as well - I have some breathable waterproof trousers which cost very little and are very lightweight. I think they cost £16

I have a Berghaus Delta 3 in 1, got it 2 years ago, still in perfect condition despite getting almost daily use in autumn and winter,
Without the fleece in it packs down pretty small.

They are expensive but its without a doubt one of the best purchases I have ever made!

I just got a softshell jacket from millets and it's really good - it's a much softer material than typical waterproofs but is properly waterproof. Thin and light but wind resistant and most importantly breathable. Blacks, Go outdoors, Millets, Mountain warehouse all have softshell jackets so worth a look

I took a TNF Resolve with me. Not quite the same as a paclite in terms of space, but it worked brilliantly in the rain and doubled up as an outer layer when things got really cold in China. Plus, the jacket can be had brand new for around £50-80. If space is really an issue and you're sticking to warm places, you could just pack a cheap poncho for emergencies but I get the impression that's not what you need or want.

For what it's worth, I also used the same bag you're taking and found rolling up the jacket wasn't a problem. The bag is brilliant, but can be quite difficult to pack everything you need at times if you're going to multiple weather zones. My only gripe with the bag overall was that I found a 15L day bag to be a little on the small side for my liking.

If you have any silly questions or want any advice, feel free to drop me an email. :)
