How far is this VW thing going to go?

Pandora's box is open. BMW now implicated as the X3 fails test by being 11 times over the legal limit for NOx.

That's not the same issue. The fact that diesel cars have been found to be many times over the limit for emission of certain pollutants has been known for a while, and completely ignored.

True but remember it was the testing of cars on the road in Europe which initially prompted them to look at VW to see why their cars passed in the lab test.

Perhaps its just a bad car and the test are a mockery anyway compared to real life.

But its going to make big changes to any tests and the motor industry. I dont think the motering industry who have been lobbying for the new real life road tests to be put back from 2018 to 2020 will get their way now.

There are loads of theories about this, the more logical ones are:

The car goes into test mode when the traction control is turned off (which is required when putting a car on a rolling road).

The car goes in to test mode when an OBD reader is connected.

The car goes in to test mode when the bonnet is open.

Just to add to this list, speed and acceleration demands are taken into account as well.

I'm looking at new cars, the diesels have the lowest CO2 emissions and therefore cheapest road tax. But then I read articles like this - makes you think again whether it's the right thing to do.

Rather amusing geeky parallels to back when it emerged NVIDIA drivers picked up on 3dmark being used and did some shenanigans to improve test results.

Well I meant nearly new or possibly lease. Like many of us I care about the climate but also want a car that will appeal to moderately attractive human females with low expectations.

My point was that VED is such a tiny proportion of the total ownership cost that it's not worth considering with most cars, new or used.

OR when ATI detected Quake 3 was running and lowered the texture quality to increase benchmark scores.
