Smiler rollercoaster at Alton Towers - carriage collision

Internal investigation has been concluded - Human error

Alton towers intend reopening smiler by end of the year

I'm interested to find out what happened

If it really was human error then I hope they find out the root cause whether it be simply inept employees or stems from management pressure / attitude to take risks to get rides going

In the mirror! *Pinch of salt...
Alton Towers bosses told the Balch family that a ride operator and an engineer were at fault for overriding the system which had stopped Vicky’s car at the top of an incline, causing it to smash into an empty car on the track.

They face disciplinary action and are believed to have undergone counselling.

Could have been a design error.

Is there anyway the employee could take any further rap for it other than being dismissed?

Yes is the short answer, although it depends on a few things. It really boils down to whether they were wilfully negligent in their actions. If they were following the rules and the accident still occurred then it's a management failure. As I said, there's many more variables that need to be considered before any prosecution could be brought. Then there's civil vs criminal....

Can. Worms.

Not sure but if it's something that was frequently happening and management were aware then hopefully they'll be brought to account too rather than just the employees being made scapegoats

If there is a system that was preventing them launching the car before the previous one had returned then I'm unsure why such a system could be overridden?

Wow those payouts are terrible for that kind of physical and mental trauma, what a reflection of how poor our compensation system is.

I did say (as did Dimple) that the payouts would be in the hundreds of thousands, but noooooooo.

I agree it's a bit of a joke, but them as the facts :(

I said it too. Got told I was a horrible sod. But nevermind ey.

I said before, every day I'm left open mouthed at what people get legally paid out in negligence cases when proved it was the fault of others but in this case Alton Towers don't want bad publicity and will make substantial payouts.

Too many of us believe stories about friends of friends who got a £100,000 payout for a broken finger and then form judgements on what other cases should get.
My Mother suffered an horrendous work injury to her right leg and got a maximum payout of £30,000 a few years ago but everybody added a zero to it and I eventually had to show her workmates the proof.

Has the girls accepted that compensation though?

I don't think a figure has been offered yet?
They've probably paid out for adjustments for where they live (ramps, chair lift etc) but a figure will be decided on when it becomes more realistic concerning the damage/future.
Most cases can take up to 3 years before pay out and childrens cases can go on until they are 18.

If I remember right, Alton Towers said they wouldn't fight it. So I cannot seeing them getting a poor result.

Do humans not design things? Whether it be the structure or process?

Or are they secretly designed and run by machines?!

Yes I'm sure that's exactly what they would mean if they said the cause was human error /shrugs
