Gentrification protest

Pretty embarassing to be quite honest, aggressive protests over a type of shop.

It's like protesting over Strictly or some other cobblers reality TV program because you don't like it, instead of just turning the channel over. Weak.

you say that but Tesco put a metro in on Cheltenham Road in Bristol, which is said to contain the longest run of independent shops in Europe, and understandably people didn't want multinational, livelihood-ruining scumbag Tesco moving in and they trashed the place; that's fair dinkum if you ask me - though it's not quite the same thing as the cereal place as it's independent and unlikely to be ruining other businesses.

Yet tesco is still there and people use it daily.

I think targeting a small independent business for any reason is stupid. This seems like people looking for a reason to cause trouble.

Is it social cleansing, or a targeted program against the poor. No don't daft. It's simple economics.
Prosperous areas attract business and investment. That in turn causes house prices and values to rise. Leading to a situation where people at the poorer end of the pay scale cannot afford to buy a house there.

Attacking a cafe that sells cereal, as if they're somehow to blame is crazy.

See I'm not a fan of Tesco's Japanese knotweed style invasive growth, nor am I a fan of £3 bowls of cereal. The only thing the latter are guilty of is a poor choice of location for their shop, well and maybe business model.

Regardless neither warrants a 200 strong angry torch mob commit acts of criminal damage and vandalism. If you want to do something about it, plead the case or sit tight. If £3 bowls of cereal are that out of place in Shoreditch then the place will go under in 2-3 months anyway.

But it might drop house prices though if no one wants to live there besides locals who trash anyone who isn't.

There is no reason whatsoever to protest against the business. The anarchist group Class War deserve a good dose of their own medicine next time they try something like this.

Wait, is all this trouble to do with the pricing?

I think it was more to do with Shoreditch becoming "trendy" due to supposed "hipsters" moving in and flogging overpriced Frosties.

Nobody in Clapham, Peckham, or whatever-the-last-town in London to undergo moderinsation and development seemed to riot...

Considering the rent/business rates that the owners will be being screwed over for, £2-4 for a bowl of breakfast cereal is actually pretty damn good V for M!

Rule #1 for lefties!

When "They" do it, it is mindless thuggery, When "We" do it, it is legitimate protest in the pursuit of social justice (Or some other such nonsense)!

As much as I think the Cereal Killer cafe thing is absolutely laughable, it's such a great shame that the hipster-hating media has managed to make everyone completely miss the point about housing issues in the capital.

The cafe has absolutely nothing to do with the housing issues in that area. How does one small independent business with a stupid niche idea affect that area? It just doesn't. I've banged on about what has caused the housing issues in London way too much. It's BTL, estate agents, bankers, BTLeave investors, Boris Johnson marketing developments in Malaysia first, our crappy/expensive national rail system meaning anyone that works in London needs to live within zone 4 if they don't want to be held hostage by the train companies both in monetary terms and how-much-of-my-life-can-I-spend-commuting terms.

Then again, what I know about Class War is that they're a bunch of idiots with no real political agenda and just like smashing stuff up and getting on the telly.

wtf are you banging on about? this has nothing to do with left-wing / right-wing politics, it's economic. talk about shoe-horning an agenda jeez

No bunch left wing artistic hippy upset that hipsters with job's have come to shoreditch so they cant afford the rent (up 50% in some areas), They attacked cereal place as that's where moron hipsters go to spend £3 on bowl cereal while the hippies moan they can only afford own brand cornflakes over imported american tosh.

Just because something is simple economics, it doesn't prevent it from being unfair or a manifestation of an unequal economic system.

Of course it has something do with the housing issues. Houses are bought up by property developers which are in turn rented or bought by trendy up and comers, for whom shops like this are a prime example of where their greater disposable income goes. The stupidly niche business doesn't affect the area, but it's a result of the influx of wealthier tenants and homeowners.

As for whether it's a valid target for the frustrations of poorer local residents is a different matter. It could be that it's just so ridiculous that it was the tipping point for some people looking to vent their anger?

This is an example of the excesses and worst qualities of the free market, and its exactly where the state should step in.
