In Chinese society, do they have long-term girlfriends / boyfriends or do they tend to marry quickly?

IOW can the question be rephrased, "Do you save your mother or your short-term partner?"

That's my view, too.

I don't know about China, but if an exam asked that question here, my assumption would be that it's more about how you rationalised the decision you reached than what the decision was.

It also rather reminds me of the basic Philosophy question about whether you'll pull the points switch on a railway with a runaway train if doing so would cause a single person to die, but six will die if you don't? And of course, all the possible variations on that theme.

I'm amazed you can't see why some people might choose differently to you :p

I think age is an important consideration, ignoring the fact that it's your girlfriend, it will still be someone ~30 years younger than your mother. That's someone with ~30 years more life to live, around half of which they will probably still be in their prime.

Would the people who choose their mother also keep the same decision if it was a choice of her and a young child unrelated to you, someone whos life has yet to begin?

it would be a hard choice but i would save arnold.
 
China of course being the world leaders in morality and the rights of humans. So obviously should be used to benchmark our own morality.
