Good Cheap Server - HP Proliant Microserver 4 BAY - OWNERS THREAD

I wouldn't like to have one of these running in my office or living room... too noisy, even on low fan speed... like you, goose...

Some people have done fan mods... mine are in the basement.

Can you not hide it under the stairs?

Thanks for the trust about the offer. I have one arriving on Thursday so just needs drives for it now. Not sure what I'll be using it for yet. Acting as a NAS and a Kodi or Plex server more than likely and possibly an FTP server.

OS I'm undecided. Server OS and Win7/10 might need too much setting up and maintenance so looking at alternatives. I've been reading up on XPEnology and tempted to try that.

Anyone have any idea where I can get a remote access card for my N40L? I've looked high and low but can't find one anywhere - I'm guessing they are now discontinued so second hand will be my only chance?

I thought i'd try and record the noise my system makes to see what people think. I recorded this with iLo reporting the fan speed to be 12% and after a 7 or 8 seconds you should be able to hear a high pitched buzzing sound. I have a feeling that sound is being produce not by the system fan but by the PSU. Although it isn't especially loud the room it's going in is really very small and the buzzing is very noticeable and extremely annoying.

Anyone have any thoughts?

I've got a spare one from my old N54L but not enough posts to access the members for sale area. :(

Getting thick here!

Been away on holiday for 10 days and forgotten things.

I believe that there is a "free" 60 day licence to set up the Gen 8 Microserver for remote access so that it can be accessed from another PC rather than keyboard / mouse / screen on microserver.

Can anybody please advise how to do this - and cost of extending licence?

Thanks, Mel

What RAID are people using? My gen8 arrives on Thursday and I'm tempted to get 4 x 3TB drives just can't decide what RAID to use.

If I just buy two drives for now to keep costs down and set them up on RAID 1, when I add another two drives later and set them up as RAID 5 for example would it wipe the data on the previous RAID setup?

Raid 5

Yes, if you set 2 up as raid 1 and later want to add more drives and change to raid 5, it will wipe the data

Ok that's good to know. I might just bite the bullet and order four at once then and just not look at my bank statement for awhile:D

Is what I did ;)

I ended up with 4x6TB drives, 8x4TB drives and 8x3TB drives... and I'm currently considering another as I've managed to fill them all up

- 2 x max capacity drives (3TB, 4TB, 6TB - WHAT IS IT??) in RAID 1 (mirrored) for photo back that I don't want to lose.

HP site says max capacity is 4 x 4TB but I have seen reports of 6TB drives running OK. Anybody tested 6GB (or 8GB !!) drives. Can't afford to buy / test!

Thanks, Mel

Just installed a 6TB Red WD - seems OK!

iLo - remote access???

ebay licence can be had for about £20.

There is a 60 day free ilo advanced pack trial from the HP site.

OK - I have installed my 60day "iLO free Licence" - BUT how on earth do I get remote access? Says I am configured for this - but how do I connect please?

totally confused - HP web site a "mess" of broken links due to company split.

Are E-bay licences legit and recognised by HP - anybody bought one ?

PS - Only £20 is from Russia + post. Most are USA with £20 postage!

Using what drives? I was offered 4 2nd hand Seagate Barracuda's but decided to splash out on 4 brand new WD Red's instead and not sure if I made right move.

Brillliant - downloaded the windows desktop version - logged on via local IP address (192.168.0.xx)- and hey presto the proliant desktop appeared within the console window. What seemed difficult in HP-speakese was actually very simple from that link. Thanks! Mel :D:D

No worries Mel_P.

Nearly all WD Reds now.

I started building my NAS with 6x 3TB Seagates and regretted it... 2 failed just after the 1 year warranty finished, another one within the next 6 months and another 6 months after that... 4 drives down in 2 years!

All my WD Reds are still going strong.

The remaining Seagates are still in use, but they're in backed up arrays.
