I think age is an important consideration, ignoring the fact that it's your girlfriend, it will still be someone ~30 years younger than your mother. That's someone with ~30 years more life to live, around half of which they will probably still be in their prime.

Would the people who choose their mother also keep the same decision if it was a choice of her and a young child unrelated to you, someone whos life has yet to begin?

Erm, yes. It's my mother? I don't care if the girlfriend / child lives for a hundred years or twenty minutes, they do not rank even close in the importance stakes to my mother.

I guess people value their mothers less than I thought!

Depends if we are on about the next 5 minutes or the next 50 years? I'm thinking realistically and the ability to make the human species survive.

I'd always rather an older person die because they have lived their life and experienced things! There is nothing more tragic than someone who hasn't made it to an adult as they haven't experienced life.
 
A girlfriend probably not, my wife, absolutely. I made a vow to my wife for starters.
then there is the fact she is the mother of my child(ren).
I think my mother would also want me to save my wife and have us enjoy the rest of our days together. Pragmatically, my mum is old and wont be on the planet for many more decades as hopefully my wife will.
 
I wouldn't save either of them if they stupid enough to end up in a life threatening situation, tuff luck. :p

But if it was not there fault then I would save the youngest. ;)

I don't think the scenario is as dramatic as that. Last time I checked, there were >7bn people on the planet, plenty of other females that you don't have to sacrifice your mother for :p.

I know this is OcUK, but do people really only expect one chance to get laid in their lives?!
