Yes, our local police have set up a speed camera in this!

I mean come on, is that legal? Or if not is it even fair?

Yeah nobody is going to look twice at a tractor parked on the verge. Its purely there to get revenue IMO.

Nothing that says they can't do that AFAIK. Pretty sure horseboxes have been a favourite of many forces for a long while now.

write to the local paper, everyone will kn ow so no one will get caught polcie will move it and the backlash means they wont be so stupid next time.

It's in today's Metro.

Of course there is no excuse for speeding, but then this is a very conniving way to "keep the roads safe" (lol). Dutch cops are like this and have been for years. Wheelie bins are a favourite, as are large mailboxes, vans, pretty much anything they can stuff a camera in to without it getting noticed.

i thought they had to be marked etc?

I was under the impression that any form of vehicle or person using speed measuring equipment had to be easily identifiable.

Otherwise they may as well paint those gigantic yellow boxes a different colour to blend in with the environment. Heck they may as well take it a step further and start hiding them behind signs and trees.

Apparently not - I only know this, as the Lincolnshire police commissioner was on the local news the other night campaigning to have more "stealth" speed cameras introduced. The current painting yellow and signage is apparently local council guidelines rather than by any law.

Whilst I don't necessarily agree with it, it is understandable given the number of drivers who do slow down only for the speed camera, and then speed back up to their previous speed

Well... at least it's still bright yellow! :p

I have to say I'm in 2 minds about the effectiveness of advertising where cameras are.

I guess there's 2 ways of looking at it:

- Bright yellow obvious cameras = people can see the cameras easily, so they'll definitely* slow down at that point, but potentially speed before and after.

- Hidden/sneaky cameras = people don't know where the cameras are, so won't necessarily slow down for them, but potentially won't speed everywhere as there could be a hidden camera.

Not really sure which would be most effective tbh?

How many people here would speed as much as they hypothetically do if there was the potential for a camera to be hidden anywhere?

* unless they're idiots/not paying attention

The problem with hidden or stealth camera's is if they are spotted, its going to be late and they will cause late/hard/erratic braking...and could then cause more of a danger on the road.

Taking your front plates off seems to be the trend around here these days, to nullify most of the cameras. 99% of the time mobile cameras are not operated by police, only contractors. So if theres something else wrong (like missing number plates) they can't pull you over and theres nothing they can do. Some people have clocked on to this.
