As of today, smoking in a car (unless it is a convertible with the roof down) containing passengers under the age of 18, can be fined £50.

About time in my opinion, amazing it has taken so long to come into force after the change of regulations for smoking inside buildings and business vehicles, yet a smoker could inflict passive smoking or their own and other youngsters.

Won't make much difference. Traffic Police are thin on the ground and this law will not realistically be enforcable on a wider scale. Even the Police said they will give some time in grace for people to get used to it.

Reading between the lines, what they are actually saying is they don't really care because it isn't a realisitc law to enforce over and above things like not wearing a seatbelt, speeding, using a mobile device etc etc.

Very good news. I can't believe that there are still idiots out there that would damage a child's health by doing this.

I've had a smoking ban in my car for years. Last time someone lit up I threatened to crash the car, needless to say she threw the fag out of the window when I put my foot down.

It should be illegal to expose children to second hand smoke regardless of where it's happening

+111 Totally Agree, This should have been done a long time ago, I do find it funny that a lot of shopping centres adopt Zero Smoking but its ok for my self and my kids to push past people standing smoking blowing it in my face, Tesco is the worse its there own staff your having to push past. Discrace

Bit extreme? Would you have really crashed the car and risk injury or death to yourself and your passengers?

More government over reach! Your home is next and don't think they won't go there. Telescreen needed to monitor parents smoking in their houses.

Second hand smoke is a complete lie. Zero evidence that second hand smoke has any negative effect in a car.

Rubbish. Second hand smoke is a very real threat to health. Concentrating it in a small unventilated space like a car greatly increases this threat.

This is a very "internet" reply :p

It should be illegal to expose anybody to second smoke, let alone children. Why should I be forced to breath in the fumes of someone’s cigarette that they chose to buy and smoke?

Now some kids seem to think that it's cool to use e-cigarettes to create big clouds of vapour in public places.

I would say ban cigarettes, however I can sense this wouldn't go down too well.

They make too much money from them to care about other peoples health.

On my walk to work this morning, I was walking behind this women walking with around 3/4 kids. she ofcourse was smoking, so I just crossed over the road.

People should be free to smoke, but protecting against the externalities of that choice is sensible, so long as it's evidence based.

Protecting children from 2nd hand smoke is inarguably a good thing. The idea of protecting people who get snooty about walking past a smoking person out on the street (as has been brought up in the thread) is just stupid - there's no evidence, or plausible cause, of harm in such an encounter - it's simply an irritation, no more than that.

Who actually does this, I would imagine a very very small part of the population are that inconsiderate. I can't even remember the last time I saw someone smoking in a car.
