England and Wales smokers, beware!

Protecting against second hand smoke aside, why is it snooty to dislike walking past cigarette smoke? It's disgusting.

+111 Totally Agree, This should have been done a long time ago, I do find it funny that a lot of shopping centres adopt Zero Smoking but its ok for my self and my kids to push past people standing smoking blowing it in my face, Tesco is the worse its there own staff your having to push past. Discrace

Hopefully all public places next, sick of dirty smokers crowding entrances with their smoking

It should be illegal to expose anybody to second smoke, let alone children. Why should I be forced to breath in the fumes of someone’s cigarette that they chose to buy and smoke?

Now some kids seem to think that it's cool to use e-cigarettes to create big clouds of vapour in public places.

in any case, why is it "disgusting"?

It's not like it's unclean.

I'm well aware of the definition of the word snooty, but unlike you (it seems), I'm also aware of the popular usage and etymology of the word; and I'm not sure any of those comments can be construed as being class based.

Who actually does this, I would imagine a very very small part of the population are that inconsiderate. I can't even remember the last time I saw someone smoking in a car.

My parents used to when I was a kid :(. Really annoys me how inconsiderate they were and that they mustn't have cared about my health and the fact I have bad asthma.

I remember a few occasions I started to feel sick when in the car and when I tried my first cigarette at school (out of curiosity) I knew exactly what that sick feeling was. So the guy saying it has 0 effect has no idea.

The definition said "especially" not "exclusively".

The comments do, in any event, indicate a feeling of superiority of the author, so probably do qualify on that definition.

My point, though, was that such feelings are really not good reason to ban something.

Well, whilst not knowing when you were a child, don't forget it used to be encouraged to smoke.

This will have been around 25 or so years ago. I always remember my Dad constantly going on about quitting, but he's smoking more than ever now 25 years later and still used to smoke in the car with other people in until recently.

Edit: another bit of evidence that second hand smoke affects others. I built him a pc that he has in a little office room. Within a year the gfx card fan was screeching, which when opening the pc to have a look was due to a build up of tar on the fan. There was a thick layer and the see through blades were turned black. If that happens within a year then I'd hate to think what a smokers lungs must be like directly breathing it in for years...

I see, on average, about 2-3 people all smoking in their car on their commute home from work every day. All of them doing so whilst driving, on their own.

Personally I think smoking whilst driving should be illegal; you can't be any more focused / in control of the vehicle than if you were using your phone..

Because it's outside. If you're going to let that bother you, you should tut and wag your finger at every driver too - surely you have better things to do than that?

Except its well documented that they don't just damage their own health, and they cost health services a significant amount by doing so.

Banning smoking in public places should certainly be the next step.

They don't just damage their health... when they are around other people. However if a person wants to smoke where it does not affect others, they should be free to do so. Also tobacco products are taxed heavily, so I think the cost on the health service is negated.

I agree with the smoking ban in confined spaces but I don't think they will ever ban it on the streets.

I cycle to work every day and take in untold amounts of car exhaust fumes but they are not going to ban cars. I would imagine just walking to work in a city of town would be just as bad for you as taking in smoke from someone else's cigarette.

It should be illegal to expose children to second hand smoke regardless of where it's happening

very true, two members of my family have suffered through cancer luckily surviving on both accounts. Neither were smokers and both caused by second hand smoke.

I would never let people smoke near my kids but that's just my opinion :)

I just don't see how this is going to be enforceable.
Are they going to stop every driver of a 4x4 that has blacked out rear windows where the driver is smoking? You can't see in to our family car at the back to see if there's a child in there at all.
