New MacBook Pro or wait for Skylake refresh?

Resolution would be 4K and that would be nothing special compared to dozens of PC-laptops with 4K screens.

Now what Apple would do, would be the thinnest 17" laptop ever. By quite a margin.

In some ways I'm disappointed in the progression of CPUs etc (I know this isn't Apples fault) but in another way I'm happy that my 2013 rMBP is still relevant. :)

Hi All,

I was all set to order a new 13" MacBook Pro this week but since then was speaking to someone who suggested waiting for the refresh to the Skylake chipset, based on the fact the new chipset is a big upgrade.

What's the general consensus re the Skylake chips and the impact on the MacBook lineup? It is a big enough update to delay buying a MacBook until next year?

Thanks

Macbook Pro will be out next year all updated. Keep saving for that. It will be big!

Where they will also bring back the real pro, a new 17" MBPro ;) ....... hopefully! *everything crossed*

A 17" redesign MBP with the MacBook keyboard and skylake...Take my money!

All this. It's time apple eliminated the bezels on the pro like other manufacturers and got some decent screen size into a marginally larger package than the current 15".

You could easily get a 16" into the current size, a 17"+ in a marginally larger body would be amaaazing. I find myself using my current 15" Pro way more than my desktop these days just because of the screen and the trackpad. The whole package is just lush.

Do you know something we don't?

Looking at the new phone CPU benchmarks. I wouldn't be surprised if we see arm chips in the next 12" Macbook if they start to overtake intel at that level. Crazy stuff.

Just remember, next year :)

I have a state of the art PC but just hardly use it. Nothing compares to the lovely experience of using a MacBook. I sold my iMac to go back to the PC so I could play a few games but I just don't have the time for long gaming sessions or the inclination. I am on my 12" MacBook most of the time, its just a lovely computing experience.

If they brought out a 16" Skylake MBP in Space Grey I would dump my PC and have both a MBP and MB. In fact I might get rid of my PC and get a 2nd hand 15" MBP as a stop gap.

Likewise. I'm sitting here with my Macbook Pro on my desk sitting in front of my turned off 40" 4k monitor connected to my powered down desktop.

Although I do kind of wish I could remove or completely fold back the screen on the Macbook so I could used the keyboard and trackpad from the laptop connected to the massive monitor without the laptop screen getting in the way. That would be nice.

Mmmm I am thinking as an awesome setup...

16" Skylake MBP
iPad Pro
iPhone 6S Plus
Apple Watch

Hmmm...my wishlist would go as follows

16"+ Macbook Pro for home, but with a detachable touch screen that can boot iOS independently to act as an iPad Pro Plus

iPhone 6S Plus, but with the bezels removed and home button behind the screen, so the larger screen but in a package closer to the normal 6S size.

12" Macbook for a commuting computer.

Apple Watch with faster processor so it's more responsive.

Apple TV, but with an Amazon Prime app and app for all other content providers with voice activated search ability to search all free and paid content within each app from the home screen.

Ok lol, so getting back to reality...I want to run one or two virtual machines on my new mac..be it a broadwell rMBP one or should I decide to wait a skylake rMBP. I would want to run a WIN10 vm for the two apps i need windows for and one Linux vm just for learning Linux. The windows programs i will be using are nothing too intensive.
Is 8GB of RAM sufficient or should i go for 16GB. Also, will a mid range i5 be suitable?

I'd get 16GB too, will have marginally better re-sale value, and will be better in the long run.

Remember Apple SSD's and RAM is soldered to the motherboard and not upgradeable!

That is a seriously ugly device, lol at that hinge. Thick enough?

It also looks flimsy in some of the videos i've seen, whilst using a stylus and the likes.

Plus Windows... yeah, i'll be waiting for the next Macbook Pro.
