Barber or hairdressers

Ideally mine needs cutting every 3 weeks but usually drag it out to 4.

Had it cut in central today, £16, usually costs £10 through a guy I know.

Best ever hair cut I used to have cost £20 a pop but he was amazing, shame he moved on, no idea where he went :(

I think the guy today was expecting a tip but I didn't bother. Perhaps if the price was set close to the value of a note I would, but I'm not leaving a £4 tip!

£10 and a good turkish barber. Actually takes pride in it and knows what hes doing. A woman chatting crap and cutting my hair... nah.
Agreed. As far as I can tell the only difference between my local Turkish barber and my local hair dresser is the price:

Barber - £8.50 (+tip)
Hairdresser - £30 (+inane chatter)

I'd shave my head if it wasn't so big and lumpy.

What's with the thread title? Aren't they both the same?

Anyway, I get mine cut at hairdressers probably around 30 minutes walk from my house. Costs £8 and go back everything 5 weeks. We seem to get along nicely.

By the modern day definition, a Barbershop and a Hairdressing Salon are quite different.

Barbershops have always been a place that men visit to have their hair and beards trimmed by a Barber. Historically these were social places that gentlemen enjoyed going to and were not a place that women would get their hair cut.

That largely is still the case today, as although not all Barber's these days are men, the fact remains that these are establishments where the staff are specialised and experienced in cutting men's hair and I've never once in my life seen a woman get their hair cut in one.

A modern Hair Dressing salon will be staffed by Hairdressers who are more qualified in cutting women's hair, due to the greater variation in hair styles. That said, they are typically unisex (aside from cultures and religions that permit this).

The simplest difference is to see it like this:

- If you want your hair cut with clippers, or a short back and sides, then go to a Barber.

- If you have longer hair or a specific style, then you are better off going to a hair salon.

The other factor is what you are prepared to pay, as an experienced Barber is typically cheaper than the most Junior of hairdressers in a Salon. So there is no reason you can't get a simple hair cut done in a Salon, but you would be paying a lot more for it.

My wife( a hairdresser) does it these days but when I was younger. Me and all my friends used to use this one lady as she would always push her ample bussoms into the back of our head. And it was a nice view from the mirror.

I pay £22 every 4 weeks usually, sometimes more often if I have a night out or event to attend mid way through. The shop is pretty expensive compared to other barbers in the area but they will spend a good hour cutting your hair if necessary and it's right in the centre of town.

Only downside is they seem to have a bit of a hard on for 'traditional' styles so you often come out looking like a 1930s mafia boss.

There is definitely a massive difference in training and skills between barbers and hair salon stylists

lol! Ah childhood memories of my hairdresser when I was about 13/14

I normally just go to the closest hairdressers to my house but I went to a barbers when I was visiting my family in Northern Ireland and it was very good. Mainly because I was given a beer during the haircut ;)

Forgot to mention the price. £15 on the dot for a good cut and a beer/coffee whilst doing it. Good chat from the staff also.

If anyone from NI reads this - Newtownards is where its at but I cant remember the street.

£11 Hairdressers every 6 weeks or so. We chat about F1 and I enjoy the conversation.

Not everyone is the stereotype you make them out to be.

I discovered the joy of walking into a Barbers (but staffed by ladies), getting a freshly poured beer, sports put on the TV. Then having my hair cut the way I want it, and it turning out awesome. Then having my hair massaged by lovely ladies in tight tops, and having a back and neck massage + hot face towels.

Also had my hair cut by a relative recently who was trained by Vidal Sassoon... but that's another story.

£20 inc tip at this Turkish fella's place called Jeff in Borough. Not your sterotypical space, you walk in and it looks proper classy. Owner offers you a drink, get your hair washed before and after and they burn your ears to get fluff out which is weird but great. Can talk if you want or just sit in silence.

Everyone in SE1 is called Jeff.

Hairdressers. Just literally had my barnett chopped and styled. £18.

Used to DIY it myself with some clippers, until I came to the harsh reality that it looked crap shaven like that.

Saves me typing it...
Ditto, on every detail!

The geezer also drinks in my pub on a Thursday and he always buys me a pint, so that's kind of a discount...

My stepmother and stepsister are both hairdressers - before she was family my stepmum used to cut my hair at a salon round the corner. Now my folks have moved out of town I pay my sister £20 for a cut, as she's normally completely skint.

Strangely, as a result of having had my family members cut my hair almost my entire life, I've developed a weird phobia of going to a barbers/salon... I'd have no idea what to say if I went in one. To the extent that I flew my sister out to LA a few years back when I was doing a road trip. She needed a holiday and also a pat on the back for getting into university, but with implicit instructions to bring along her haircutting kit :)

Would use either one until recently, used to just drop in to whichever was nearest whenever I felt like I wanted a trim. Now frequent the same place run by two sisters £10 for a cut but I always pay £15 as I get a decent coffee for gratis and the younger of the two most absolutely grinds against my arm each time I'm in her chair, if it's a sales technique it's a chuffing good one.
