2 Easters in this pay year.. How does that work for holidays?

Depends on the industry. Every company I have worked for only gives the minimum. Transport, engineering, construction.

I think you will find the vast majority of people in this country only get 28.

Really? I've worked in all manner of sectors (manual labour and office based) and never worked anywhere that only give you 20 bookable days of holidays

I used to dream of a wet box , my boss used to make us sleep in a cess tank, all 27 of us and when we got out he'd slice us in two with a bread knife.

Luxury. We used to have to get out of the lake at three o'clock in the morning, clean the lake, eat a handful of hot gravel, go to work at the mill every day for tuppence a month, come home, and Dad would beat us around the head and neck with a broken bottle, if we were LUCKY!

Yep. And out of all my friends, the vast majority are the same.

My gf gets 28+8 and she has always had at least 5 more days holiday per year then me but she is in a proper industry.

Steel fabrication - 25 + bank hols.
I get 25 because I've been there longer than 5 years, I think it's 20 days + b/h to start off then an extra day per year upto 5.

Luxury. We used to live in an old slipper in the middle of the motorway.

an old slipper...you were lucky.

Our company has a rolling scale, start off with 22 then end up 28 days after 15 years service, if your management level I think it's 30.

I am on 25 with bank holidays on top.

25 days - was 28 but I traded a few days for extra salary :)
I work 4 day shifts, so if I wanted I could get 12 days off on only 4 days holiday.

I'm happy with it tbh, any more than what I have currently would just be wasted.

I didn't think anyone would have the gall to give their employees the absolute legal minimum.

Must lead a very sheltered life when it comes to employers then.

Far too many of my friends and family work, across many industries, where the employer goes out of their way to do the absolute legal minimum in all aspects.

Not really (so hold the sarcastic smiley), since 16 I have worked in at a Burger King franchise, B&Q, Argos, a fishing float making factory, a distribution warehouse, uncountable number of kitchens/restaurants, a car dealership, a global marketing company and local government.

25-28 days on top of bank holidays were pretty much standard in all of them .

I wonder if this maybe a regional thing as whilst I've done lots of different jobs they've all been in the South East.

ours is 25+banks, which is a recent change, used to be 20+banks until you hit 5 years service or were important, thankfully can sell those 5 back down to the legal minimum.

I still struggle to burn those 20 in a year, yes, I have no life.

To be fair so do I. I get 28 days plus bank holidays, plus up to 5 days rolled-over from last year. So I never used my full allowance in the first year so now "stuck" on getting 33 days each year which I struggle to use.

So I end up just booking random Fridays off where I do nothing just to burn them. Conversely there are other people at my work who get 34 days (long-service) yet come the end of the year are asking to use next year's holidays (which you can do strangely at my place).

That's one of the best uses for holidays, especially if no one else is home.
A full day doing nothing with nobody to answer to = bliss!

Could be. The best i ever had was a firm which gave me 20 plus 8 and an extra day for every 10 years service. The most anybody was on was 23 days.

We get stuffed in England anyway. The Scots get 9 bank/public holidays and NI get 10 on top of the 20.

As for europe the average is 34 days including public/bank holidays and the uk is at the bottom of the list.

Even the statutory minimum we are bottom of the list

COMPARISON OF STATUTORY MINIMUM DAYS' LEAVE AND PUBLIC HOLIDAYS ACROSS EUROPE
Country; annual leave; public holidays; total leave EU Finland: 25; 14; 39 Austria: 25; 13; 38 Greece: 25; 12; 37 France: 25; 11; 36 Portugal: 22; 14; 36 Spain: 22; 14; 36 Sweden: 25; 11; 36 Denmark: 25; 10; 35 Luxembourg: 25; 10; 35 Germany: 20; 13; 33 Belgium: 20; 10; 30 Italy: 20; 10; 30 Ireland: 20; 9; 29 Netherlands: 20; 8; 28 UK: 20; 8; 28

Love how Greece is third with a minimum of 37 days holiday a year....................

Actually just checked the stats and 35% of companies offer 25 days plus the bank holidays in the uk so about 1 in 3.

STill a **** ratio.

I've worked in the South East all my life and my current employer is the first to give more than the statutory minimum as standard (all have given extra depending on length of service).

12 days holiday?! is that the norm over there? are there a lot more bank holidays?

This is one of the reasons i do not think coming out of the EU would be a good idea, It would mean this country can then put it's own employee rights in place which i doubt will be as generous as the EU's current.

Sorry for a slight derail..........Back on topic!

well on the bright side, at least you get two lots of easter eggs this year. every cloud has it's silver lining.

Quite, whilst I'm quite centrist I do think the Tories have a natural disdain for worker's rights and that is the only things that worries me about leaving the EU. More accurately I think they have too much faith in the "free market" and treat business needs as far more important that human needs.
