AMD partners with Dell and Oculus to bring its Radeon GPUs into new territory (NYSE:AMD, NASDAQ:FB, NASDAQ:DELL)
AMD has partnered with Oculus and Dell to set up "Oculus Ready" Alienware computers with Radeon GPUs.
The PCs in question will start at $999 USD and will leverage AMD's LiquidVR technology, which is touted as low-latency, comfortable, and highly compatible with VR headsets.

No launch date is announced as of yet -- Alienware's website only lists the upcoming systems as "coming soon".

VR is something I looking forward to giving a try. LiquidVR seems to be the go to API for the VR industry at this moment in time. Just how good is it though?

Doesn't matter if it's the dominant, the best doesn't always win out. But it's obviously good enough for Dell and Oculus. Are Oculus still the prominent VR dev? Not really been following the VE scene but i see other companies are working on headsets now.

Seems to be pretty good news for AMD though, hope it gives them a cash injection. No idea what demand will be like for VR mind.

Oculus' recommended specs are a 970 or 290, any PC with that can slap the oculus ready logo on, it doesn't really mean anything

If you click through, the alienware page doesnt even mention AMD and the page has weird green accents...

The alienware link doesn't show anything but this news was released to the markets by AMD so it is a confirmed deal.

SUNNYVALE, CA -- (Marketwired) -- 10/05/15 -- AMD (NASDAQ: AMD) today announced a collaboration with Oculus and Dell to equip Oculus Ready PCs with AMD Radeon™ GPUs, starting at $999USD. The powerful PCs are designed to deliver stunning gaming performance and enable spectacular VR experiences for consumers around the world by leveraging AMD VR leadership with LiquidVR™ and Graphics Core Next architecture.

"It's an exciting time to be at the heart of all things Virtual Reality," said Roy Taylor, corporate vice president, Alliances and Content, AMD. "I'm confident that with Dell and Alienware, we can enable a wide audience of PC users with extraordinary VR capabilities powered by AMD Radeon GPUs."

The Alienware pc's i'm not too clued up on but I know Dell is a big pc player so is a good deal for AMD LiquidVR.

Do you know what, I was going to post up to say that all the major system builders have all AMD GPU's as an option, but actually checking Alienware, they seem to only offer the Radeon 370 on their current desktops, and it doesn't look like they offer any Radeon Mobile options... so yeah I guess it is kind of good news that Dell are adding them back in as an option, not sure why they would have been unilaterally dropped in the first place.

I always look at share prices now for what effect this kind of 'news' has on the markets. Share prices have dropped since this news broke.

AMD needs to see something through, from start to finish. The VR idea was sold to them, and now they have jumped on board they have to see it through, they cant let it fail like their other techs including the last great failure in mantle. It's not fair to the limited amount of customers they have, and they need to win a few more.

Check out HTC Vive. It's a Valve developed headset manufactured by HTC. By all accounts it blows Oculus out the water. Check out some videos on YouTube, it has full room tracking to sub millimetre precision. Plus valve made a cheeky portal themed demo. Exciting stuff.

Interesting piece of kit. In terms of innovation it is stunning. Seems to bring its own nifty little gimmicks to the table which could be abused by creative devs to really pump out some interesting games.

I don't really care who wins out, as long as someone wins out fairly quickly. Last thing i want is for the market to be so competitive off the bat, that it becomes unprofitable to invest time/money into VR games and features. It is this reason why i am leaning more toward the Oculus than anything else, as they seem to have some fairly solid support from some pretty big names.

You do know mantle is the building block behind LiquidVR don't you.

I love how this whole thread is focused around the build and design choices of a competitior of ocuk :o:p

No competitor linking. Am not linking anything other than a news post.. If ocuk has any issue with this thread am sure they will close it..

Now had I linked to a page of sales then fine it would have been against the fourm rules.
