Good Cheap Server - HP Proliant Microserver 4 BAY - OWNERS THREAD

When our WD NAS was failing we tried a check over USB - passed. Ran it directly connected and found loads of issues.

Ok -did it that way as could start it straight away. Will do again on my win 10 PC but that will have to wait as copying loads of photos from there onto my 6TB raided discs on the Proliant. That is the only machine that I have a spare sata data / power lead (by disconnecting the data lead from the DVD writer!)

Will let you know the outcome later.

Well - the outcome was that with direct SATA connection no errors showed and a further CHKDSK showed no errors. Have reformatted and reintroduced as a Raid 0 device - will check tomorrow morning.

Next question !!

Windows load time has increased as I have transferred stuff to the server.

Since putting about 1GB of data on my 6TB Raid 1 WD reds and introducing the 1TB Raid 0 drive my load time for windows seems to have gone from seconds to many minutes. The drives seem to be being accessed all of this time and them with a flurry of activity windows open to the log on screen.

Have I ***ered something in Windows 7 or is this normal behaviour as the stored amount (not the HDD capacity) increases

Well - flashing red light - drive error. I give up with this drive for use in the ProLiant! Have to use it as a backup drive in a USB caddy "in the garage". Something peculiar somewhere!

Controller must be being fussy then!

More than that! I was copying some data across overnight when this drive "went down" and this seems to have disrupted the 6TB raid and I have a corrupt folder.

Rebooted the ProLiant and the indicator now flashing amber and it tells me its rebuilding the Raid 1 array. My brain is becoming a bit blitz'd with this - I may just set the 4 drives independently if its this sensitive!

on 3% rebuild - very slow!!

Perhaps a NAS would have been a lot easier!!!!

Mel

PS - rebuild seems to have worked - after rebuild and reboot CHKDSK tidied up the HDD and corrupt folder seems to have gone!

ebay ilo licences - I've bought 6 of them so far and all 6 work fine. Are any on best offer? Just offer £20 inc postage. Keep trying til you get one :)

I am content with "remote access" on my local intranet. Do I need to buy an iLO licence for that? Can anyone advise please.

For 'full' remote access, yes you need a licence.

Unlicensed Ilo's only give you until an OS starts to boot before cutting you off.

So you could use it for setting up HDDs and firmware updates but not managing the server?

Never tried tbh but since the Proliant update is an ISO, I'd expect it to kick you off before it finished loading.

As a side note, did you not get my trust message?

Oh woe is me. The 6TB RAID now seems to keep showing disc errors. Took them out and reformatted - now installed on overnight as Raid 0 - this morning red light flashing.!!!! 6TB drive disconnected as showing errors?

Rebooted, pressed F2, drive reconnected. Thought I would reformat but drive "disappeared from Windows during format.

Ran Drive Array controller again - pressed F2 to reconnect drive. Ran HP diagnostics and it assured me all was OK. Reinstalled array drivers from HP website. Booted to windows. said drive was RAW? Asked it to format - taking a long time - 20 mins and still formatting!

hi guys
can i use the server running kodi to stream to my TV, i have a GPU installed with hdmi? its running WHS 2012 r2.

can you try them in the other pair of bays? and do you really want to be running raid 0 with a possibly dodgy disk?

Nox

Format failed in ProLiant. Put in Win10 PC and now after using "DISKPART" it is slowly doing a full format - quick format did not work.

When I put them back in I will do that - PS "Dodgy Disk" - I hop not they are both BRAND NEW 6TB WD Reds!

Perhaps 6TB is just a step too far for the HP microserver??
