UK to start charging for plastic bags

So what are you guys now using as bin bags? I wonder what we'll do when we run out of plastic bags... It's going to keep me up at night with worry.

We got stung this morning with plastic bags - pushed us over our budget so had to hand a bottle of Merlot back.:eek:

Comes to something when pensioners can't have a bottle of nice wine a day.

Should have just fined the wife for forgetting to bring the bags, that would have sorted that problem. :p:D

Had a funny in Tesco
Woman throwing a wobbly at checkout, which started out about having to pay was silly, then said her reusable were in her car so need free ones as she had forgotten to bring them in.
I assisted her at this point by pointing out she could put her shopping back in the trolley, wheel it out to the car then pack into the bags directly into her car boot.

I am surprised I am still alive at this point the look she gave me :)
She relented though and paid for bags, I suspect she didn't have any reusable ones at all ;)

Ive been using the rectangular ones, the £1 ones for years now, far superior.

They pack far better and are far easier to get into position in your car so they dont fall over, i dont like the Jute ones though leave annoying bits stuck to your car

The crates used to be good. tesco had them as well, they stopped due to lazy people and free bags. Hopefully they may make a comeback

Not shunning my collection of plastic bags now are we? :p

Should've saved up more!

Was in Boots this morning and for some reason just thought it would be supermarkets so gave the cashier a very vacant look when she asked for 5p :/

A well run household does not run out of bin bags. :p

My point was really that are you buying bin bags for each bin or just accepting that 5p a bag is a worthwhile expenditure? Eitherway you're going to need to use a bag of some kind no? It's probably cheaper to buy a carrier bag and using them as bins?

Only annoying thing about this for me is that I reuse plastic carrier bags to clean up after our dog, so I tend to get through a lot of them. Guess I'll be buying a bag for life and proper dog waste bags from now on.

As Scotland have been doing this for ages...

Normal bag = 5p, bag for life = 10p.
Buy half as many bags for life, they hold twice as much.

Over the course of the next 6 months keep buying them until you always remember to:
  • Take bags from car to the shop
  • Always put bags back into the car

Now never need to buy bags, have enough to take a few loads into the house and still have some left in car.
Even a few of the big bags (£1 ones?)

Doesn't take long to get used to.
Quit whining :P

Also, buy binbags, 100 for "not a lot".

Ikea bags? Or home delivery?

Ikea bags hold a SHED load and I very much doubt they will give up anytime soon. We have 2 of the blue ones and they are epic.

Keep a few in the boot of the car and haven't really ran into problems in the 4 years of doing so...

Talk about people going OTT! lol

Lol! Somebody was just telling me supermarkets fearing the rise of metal shopping baskets being stolen now. You couldn't make this up.

Finally, does anyone know what the penalties are for any company that just ignores the new ruling? Who's actually enforcing this given it isn't criminal law and the state have no financial incentive themselves (outside the minor VAT contribution) to enforce it?

Yeah any premises less than 250 employees this new ruling doesnt apply. The penalty is a £5,000 fine btw.
