Why won't my car sell?

Not to sound negative but anyone who offers a set price for the car over the phone is normally a joker. Who in there right mind would only knock you down £50 on your asking price without turning up and trying to at least get a couple hundred off

I sold my girlfriends old Corsa a few years ago and the guy who bought it did exactly this.

He then took the car away for the asking price, minus £50, the next day.

Not since my Mondeo have I personally bought a car without agreeing the price before seeing it.

Nice! I did not see that coming.

Hope all goes well. Should have taken a deposit though, as he could try and haggle you down after scrutinising the car.

Hah, it's a good car. I told you. No doubt I couldn't have done it without the help of those here.

It's crazy...I won't accept less than the asking price at that point realistically. I will look at him in horror and disbelief if he tries to bargain further.

I have basically agreed to buy another car without seeing it (recently), but it's owned by my cousin and I know he's kept it beautifully having been in it a few times.

I've driven plenty cars with that engine, quite aware of how fast they go (or otherwise!). For what it's worth diesels feel an awful lot quicker than they actually are - especially the older ones - because of the way they deliver their power. Nothing nothing nothing BOOOST nothing.

Redlining and ragging them does no harm though, a lot of people consider it good for them to do it occasionally - it's an "Italian tuneup"

I'd agree with that as well, yeah older diesels, christ, just as you get power... you're out of it and changing up... it's why I won't own a Diesel, just can't get around the weird power delivery.

An autobox largely makes that go away. I don't notice when mine is 'out of power' because it's automatically shifted to the next gear.

A manual diesel though is a nasty thing.

Do you ever drive on the manual shifting bit of your gearbox? I've always wanted to use it but it's unbelieveably bad at letting you make your own decisions. I know why it's making the decisions for you (it'll change when it decides you need to despite being in the manual mode), but it just seems pointless.

I do very occasionally but not very often. I have the Sports Automatic Transmission option - so I have paddle shift as well and it will hold the gear in manual mode and won't change up or down unless there is a risk of stalling or you hit the limiter.

When I push on I always tend to take over the gears because brilliant though the box is, it's just a bit slow to respond and I can keep it on the boil better myself. However I sometimes find I have left it in manual mode and shout at it when it sits in 8th when I want 4th
