California Adopts Doctor-Assisted Suicide Law

This would seriously play a big part in my choosing where to live now. Having watched my dad suffer a painful, degrading, death from cancer, I do NOT want my kids to have to witness that with me. I want them to remember me while I still have my senses and dignity.

Same here. I'm currently a part time carer for my grandad (sharing duties with mum and uncles and aunts, but we're the "main" carers since we live in the same town as grandparents) who is currently terminal. The tumor is in his head, so it's only going to get worse. Much much worse.

If I ever get a terminal diagnosis and right to die still isn't legal, I'm getting a big bag of heroin, getting **** faced with my nearest and dearest and then shooting up.

Legally assisting someone opens the door too much for murder. If someone is badly disabled, what's stopping someone from giving them an OD and saying they wanted to commit suicide?

Obviously there would be a motive somewhere but it all starts to become a bit questionable.

err the fact the disabled person never went through all the interview process?

Finally the humans are catching up with the dignity we afford to a pet, no wonder it takes so long for governments to make substantial progressive changes.

Tbh, its good to offer the choice, terry pratchett (rip) put it quite well in his documentary when he pointed out the 'messiness of amateur attempts' and that people (especially when terminal, painful illnesses are concerned) should be allowed to take a dignified route should they wish.

As others have said, the choice is the important bit, it's not like we're going to force death on everyone who gets a sniffle or feels a bit sad.

Indeed, having just watched my stepfather finally die from starving himself to death (he had already tried to end things twice via overdoses but he somehow survived massive amounts of drugs that would have killed most people with no issues whatsoever) yesterday after losing the ability to clean himself after passing solids due to his MND progressing I cannot and will not ever believe that we cannot devise a set of safeguards that would work. Nobody should be made to suffer in such a manner, we don't allow animals to be treated in such a way yet humans, go right ahead and make them suffer :(

Sorry, I'm obviously a little emotional right now.

Good move, if only we could get a similar law in over here. I don't hold much hope though. With stupid people forcing their views on others, you don't believe in suicide regardless of circumstance, good for you don't commit suicide, let others do as they wish.

Sorry for your loss.
