Called at the local supermarket on the way home, bought a few odds and ends, got £50 cash back, did my usual thing of just rolling up the cash in the receipt.
Just had a shower and go changed, took the money out of the rolled up receipt to put in my wallet, £60 instead of £50.

Ok no big thing £10 too much. The guy who served me I have been served by lots of times, I think he's a pensioner just working part time. Is he going to be in trouble for the mistake? being £10 down on the till. Or will it have passed as just a quirk of the system and when I take back the £10 when I call in tomorrow, would that end up with him in trouble?

Hmmmmmm

I used to work at Tesco, if someone returned the money it means I made a mistake and then I'd likely be in ****.

When money was down in the till it was usually just taken as an error of small change building up.

Mistakes are made, i've done it before. Handed back a £20 instead of a £10. He'll probably get moaned at for it being down, it's easily done! But if you are taking it back, they'll just put the till £10 for today/tomorrow whenever you take it back and it will even the safe/till out :)

Just give it back next time you're in. Don't be a *****.

Giving it back is the plan, I was just thinking which way to do it, with my receipt in hand, which will show who served me or just taking it in and saying I noticed it was wrong when I got home but conveniently forgot the receipt and who served me.

This could land him in the **** supermarkets are ruthless at least if you keep it they won't know who on that till made it £10 down

It's likely he'll be invited to a formal discussion about the loss. If this isn't an isolated incident it's possible he could lose his job (I don't work for Tesco so don't know their policy).

I've had friends in similar positions. They've told me that they have a fairly informal interview pack where you have to fill in a questionnaire. This just involves questions like 'do you remember anyone trying to confuse you with change?' etc.

If it's not isolated, he should be being incredibly careful with money and if he is still giving excess cash out, maybe a checkout isn't the place for him to work..

He will be sacked if it is not his first offence. I remember a girl who's till used to be down by sixty to one hundred pounds once and she was dismissed after the third time.

He's probably going to be fine, I'm glad you're concerned though. as a retail worker (part time Saturday job while still at school) I appreciate that.

Yup, afaik tills are totalled everytime someone is swapped, it is usually why they close a lane and open the one next door.

Not usually every time. When I worked there you had to do a till count when the till got above £150 or if someone paid with £50 notes.

I think they really only require you to do a formal count if the till is closing.

It's likely he'll get pulled aside if it's £10 down.. I've seen someone get pulled for the till being up too! :o

Well yeah, that would indicate they short changed a customer? Have you ever been short changed? It's almost impossible to prove unless the person on the till admits they made a mistake.

Do you not think that's to do with the fact she was stealing the money?

A till being down a tenner is one thing and it being down £60-£100 several times a completely different matter.

I've worked with tills for a long time and it's actually very rare to see it bang on at the end of the day it's always out by a few pence or a couple of quid so in a supermarket a tenner could easily be done.

But £60-£100 then something fishy is going on.

no he wont be in bother, he may be told about it but not have his job on the line unless he's made the same mistake many times. keep it. his manager will note the mistake and alert him (maybe) if you go into the store and ask for the manger (not a normal employe) and say infront of whoever this guy gave you more everyone will know and cause for gossip which in the long run will give the old guy more grieve (from my years of experience working in these places). While you would be doing the right thing the other employees will most likely look at you like an idiot wondering why you brought it back. sad but true.
