Under the hot sun.
Hi,

I have the H100i many years now (around 3). However recently when the CPU gets warm there is a loud ticking/cracking noise, the cpu temp skyrockets to 64C with barely a load on 2 cores, and both pipes are hot.

If I restart the system, the noise is gone after awhile and one of the pipes gets cold again, while the other is warm (not hot).

If I do not overclock the CPU and run it at stock speeds, regardless the load (even full) it will take hours at full load to eventually have the same issue.

Do you believe the cooler it on the way out? Because if so, I do plan to start building a custom loop sometime soon, and need to start looking right now for blocks (2011 for the 4820K and the 295X2).

Cheers.

I would say it is on its way out. The temps sounds like it's not spinning correctly while under high load and high heat output, such as when overclocked. which could be the motor or impeller or both.

It may run for a good while before it packs in but something is clearly wrong to cause those problems. I would be safe and go custom loop especially for high overclocks.

Is the pump connected to the cpu fan header? if so, you could lower the fan curve for that.

nah it is on it's way out unfortunately. Tonight started after 1h playing SWTOR. At stock speeds also -_-

Need to budget for a watercooling setup.

I wonder if the OCUK Tech labs W16 + another 120 rad will be enough to cool the 4820K and the 295X2.

At least check the cooler's pump rpm and see if its running within spec. if not, then yeah, not enough liquid circulation to dissipate heat from your CPU can cause your CPU temp to climb up in a matter of seconds.

You do have a 5 year warranty from us for that cooler, since it's only been 3 years, I say take advantage of it and get the newer version as a replacement.

Thank you but it was a manufacturer refurbished unit, bought from here of course, with only 90 days warranty.

I am happy and not complaining, because it managed to last exactly 2 years and 6 days, while was working more than 70 hours per week. :D

Oh I see.. oh well, at least you were able to utilize the cooler and put tons of hours on it for quite some time :)
