CHEAP mileage muncher

I got myself a 1.4L diesel Fiesta for not much at all with c. 150k on the clock, got 59mpg out of it if I was careful.

OK so the only dodgy car I've ever bought came from someone who wanted me to meet him at a unit down some run down industrial estate... I didn't like it there, bought the car as it seemed OK then got out. Turned out to be a right turd with all sorts of frankly dangerous bodges and 12 months MOT not worth the paper it was written on... I've got a complex OK?!

4k/month is a serious amount of mileage to put on a car, regardless of cost so reliability should be forefront. In that case, I'd be looking at a 1.8/2.0 Accord or Avensis and potentially think about LPGing it.

Otherwise, if going diesel, the usual suspects:
Octavia
Passat
406
Rover 75
Golf

I'd be looking at an automatic with cruise control and a bug turbo diesel lump at the front if I did 4k miles a month I think.

That Octavia is the 2.0TDi, nowhere near as reliable as the 1.9TDi, the 2.0Tdi PD suffered with oil pump issues, injector issues on certain models and early ones suffered with porous heads.

A Passat 1.9 TDI has to be the obvious answer to this. Cheap, efficient, and reasonably reliable. Nice enough to drive too.

Try to find one that has already had it's suspension refreshed, and a timing belt done recently, although she'll be needing to do a timing belt every year at them miles, so that's almost irrelevant too.
