Online company not wanting extra business?

I'll remember to try that in future!

Hell one simple contact and Ive had £250 off a monitor before now and and on more than one occasion bought things that had been on TWO prices much later on by just asking.

Shy boys get nothing :P

The problem is, if its a big company the low end staff you deal with wont have authority to give a single penny of discount. If they are sensible though they should pass your request through to a person with authority (which is how ocuk handle it, the people have always explained they can't action that but will ask somebody who can).

OP: If its worth doing for ease of getting all your stuff from one place, i would try and contact somebody higher up.

You would be surprised and I think you would find out they would say yes. They did with me anyway.

I asked them if they could put a monitor back on sale for me when I missed the daily, they did and now I have a beautiful new monitor!

All hail OCUK.

They replied no, they don't price match and can't offer discounts. Anything else they can help me with?

Just seems a bit odd to me. Thoughts?

Who is it and what are you buying? That will help with the advice.

For guitar parts on the guitars I build, I expect 25-30% volume discount depending how many guitars I make in a year and the type of parts. Negotiations on the wood is more bespoke.

For equipment like amps, cases, pa or even guitars, 10-15% is readily obtainable even on low volume and one off purchases.

Depends on their markup I guess - sometimes for branded items the markup may only be 5-20% from the supplier

True but if you are going to lose £3,200 of sales then wouldn't you rather still make £320 of profit than zero by not selling them?

Not sure about mentioning it but since I haven't insulted them I might as well. The company is Andertons.co.uk. I've bought the Victory V30 amp (I bought it today) as they're the only UK place with it, and getting it from the Spain dealer would be harder. The company I asked them to price match was Thomann.

I should stress Andertons have been nothing but polite and promt in their replies, they just said the couldn't match the price which is a shame.

I've bought the amp since it's awesome and they've got it anyways (at 30 quid over RRP). But thomann was a bit cheaper on all of the other stuff and had a flat 40 euro shipping rate to Gibraltar regardless of order size, whereas andertons would scale up. They told me they heavily subsidise orders to Gibraltar but it does seem expensive compared to the other UK companies I've used before.

By comparison when I bought a used guitar from peachguitars they upgraded it to a free hardcase (so it wouldn't get damaged) and gave me free shipping. Obviously totally different product and company etc. But it did make me check peach first, and if they had the stuff in stock I'd have likely purchased from them.

Now someone from them is going to see this thread and poo through my letterbox in true GD style :(

Andertons position is fair on this given the non UK scope. They will price match in the UK against other uk dealers.

Peach are always good but different margins on second hand guitars etc.

Now that you mention it I definitely should have had that in the OP. The euro rate will have quite an effect and I understand that's a reason they might not price match. But then it's still only 5% or just anything like "We'll waive the 100 quid shipping" which would have made me smile and think yup nice I'll get it from them haha. Just anything to make the deal seem sweeter if you know what I mean.

I know Andertons very well, they are based in Guildford and i spent at least an hour a week there when i went to the University of Surrey. They have very low margins as much of what they stock is essentially as concession stock (especially the pricier stuff). In this case if it is a concession and not actually Andertons own stock, they cant change the price as the stock would still be owned by the supplier and priced according to the supplier, they would just get a portion of the sale.

You cant compare prices outside of the UK to UK stockists as the price differences vary massively and we usually pay a fair premium.

I love Andertons, they are helpful and passionate about what they sell. You can waste hours in their trying out everything in the soundproof rooms.

Ahh, see now this would make sense. Spoke to 'James' on the phone just now to confirm my address, really nice fella and seems like a great company.

Just a shame they couldn't match the price or anything similar. There were a few other UK sellers also cheaper than them, not just Thomann, just used Thomann as in Gibraltar it doesn't matter much where I buy from.

I'm sure I'll buy again from them anyways as I need the victory cab to go with the head! ;)

Thomann have good prices and i used them for my 6 string bass order as 6 string models are hard to find but they are sorta a bit like 'scam' compared to OCuk. The products from them are cheap and great if they work perfectly but after sales support feels almost non existent, where as Andertons like OCuk are a lil pricier but have great support and seem more like a shop run by enthusiasts for enthusiasts. I actually ended up going to Andertons when my active bass pickups went on the fritz because Thomann required return postage to Germany to sort it out, and my base is solid hardwood, so it would have cost me an arm and a leg even if Thomann covered repair costs.

If you ever pass through Guildford, check them out! Even if you dont want to buy anything, it is like a themepark for musicians! They have no issue with browsers trying 5 or 6 different instruments/amps/pedals in their sound proof rooms, so its a great place to test out stuff to see if you get the sound you are after before you buy. They even have a points based loyalty card :D

Try my position.... I try to be the cheapest on everything I sell online. I am clearly a business and yet I still get customers offering stupid prices for things? I am talking a £279.99 item and they send a message asking "will you take £200".

I mean honestly, what runs through peoples heads? "This company is obviously the cheapest and I can see they have sold a lot, I will offer them 20% less than they are selling them for" .... Ermmm no?!

Kind of different I know, but I thought I'd just rant a bit :)

Well an update since I said I bought the amp. They called me to say it's the demo model and scratched and a small dent that's hard to see. They said I can have it or wait a few weeks for new ones. I said do I get a discount for the used one... No but they could put a free pack of strings in my order. Free strings on an 830 pound and that's 30 quid over retail price and used as the demo model... No thanks. I've said I'll wait but will see if I can buy from a competitor in the meantime and cancel it. They were as I said before very polite, but I just can't help feeling mugged off a bit.

Edit: fixed some spelling, not great on my phone.

Edit: On my pc now so I'll write a bit more. The amp is a tube amp also, tubes have to be replaced over time. I have no guarantee of how that amps been treated etc. And as they told me over the phone the warranty for Victory Amps is UK only and wouldn't cover me. So other then it being dead on arrival I have no recourse if it died in a year or whatever. Just so weird that they offer no discount at all. It's already over RRP... and it's now a used ex demo product (with scratches and nicks I was told). Who sells a used demo product at full price? Such a weird situation.

I'll be contacting a load of other EU sellers to see if any of them will ship to Gibraltar, and if not I'll ask Victory directly if they will. If that's not possible... I'll be a different amp lol! Really wanted the V30, but kinda left a sour taste in my mouth now.
