Nvidia to discontinue GTX960 2GB and replace it with 4GB version

Probably because the 950 won't be selling with it being the almost the same price as the 2GB 960.

If the 960 got an actual 4gb of VRAM it'd make me laugh at the 970 a bit... I know they're not the same GPU :p

I don't really see how people can say this is screwing over customers. If people wanted 4gb, then why did they buy 2gb?

It may replace them in terms of price bracket but you cant say anyone has been done over by it as it will probably come in at a slightly higher price (article mentions $220 vs $200 on newegg).

Should i get angry over having 4gb 290xs because if i had bought at a later date i could have ended up with a 390x with 8gb of VRAM?

The only people who would be annoyed are the owners who want to go SLI as their cards will have had a very short retail life, but you can always buy second hand and the cards wont just suddenly stop being sold (they will be gradually phased out with special offers on the older stock).

I know, this being 'Overclockers' I am going to get ****ged off for saying this, but I have a 2gb GTX 960 in my ITX office PC and frankly it is great.

No noise, low power, tiny and whilst it may not run Crysis (what can lol...), it will run WOW on high settings, 1440p at 60fps for a little lunchtime relaxation. it will also run Civ 5 maxed out at 1440p and skylines.

I appreciate it is not a 'power card' but I think compared to the options available 3 years ago, it is amazing.

The 980ti is better, as is the 970, but come on, for 150 quid, it is great value, and supported.

I just dont get why they dont put out a 960Ti? Give that 4GB(or 3.5) of vRAM and keep both in the line.

Is the 970 still selling so well that they are afraid of eating into it?

I suspect this, although they may be waiting for the AMD 380X to make its appearance.

Agree with this. 960 is a great budget GPU. It's spot on for 1080P just don't try 1440P+ etc.

Honestly think the next 960 / 970 replacement from Pascal might be enough for me. Obviously I'll still buy the Titan but in terms of what they can do these cheaper cards are getting really good. If the next lower down cards could cope better @ 1440P I would be really tempted to just grab one of them and enjoy cheap gaming (Obviously this won't happen and I will buy the fastest but still these lower end cards are capable imho).

I have a 960 in a itx rig. Silent and excellent 1080p gaming card. Overclock the be-jesus out of my gigabyte itx one.

A GTX960 has give new live to my aging Q6600 system. Must say I have been very happy with it, yes there are much better cards but they would have been a waste.

+11

My brother tends to go for these sort of cards, Radeon 270 / GTX 460 before it but yeah I am kind of glad to see Nvidia are finally getting on the ball and not nickle and diming people for every little spec. Still it does beg the question why they couldn't have done it sooner but then that's the way things are I suppose.
