Can I run at 4k? Is the Samsung 4k monitor any good?

Hi guys, was just curious if I would be able to run things at 4k with my rig. After seeing the Samsung U28D590D 4K UHD Monitor at such an affordable price (£300 - $450), it intrigued me to see if I could actually use it successfully.

AMD fx-8320 (@3.8Ghz)
GTX 970 MSI Twin Frozr OC edition 4gb
16gb Ram
Gigabyte 78LMT (AM3+)

Are these (specifically this one) 4k monitors actually any good? The Cheap price from samsung makes me hesitate a little bit to splash out on one.

Any help would be much appreciated.

I do not have personal experience with the monitor, although i was looking at one when they were released :p but http://www.guru3d.com/articles-pages/nvidia-geforce-gtx-970-and-980-reference-review,22.html basically shows that you can get decent fps at 4k using the REFERENCE 970 so yours will get a bit higher I imagine.
If you are willing to lower the settings, there is no reason why not. I was questioning getting a 4k display a month or so ago, and someone told me that things are incredibly small on anything under 40 inches which as a monitor is impractical. Others will come with personal experience, but you wont have issues running it aslong as you lower the settings a tad :)

I purchased that monitor last year and initially ran it at 4K with a 3 GB Geforce 780 Ti (I now have Titan X SLI). Older games like Borderlands 2 ran at max settings at 4K with no issues. Newer games I had to drop to a mixture of Medium to High if I wanted to run the game at 4K. The good thing about the monitor is that the high dpi means you can drop AA. And you can drop to 1080p if you want to crank up the quality.

But I purchased the monitor mainly for the improved text quality that a high dpi monitor gives. It's just a nicer experience.

I'm assuming you have a 1080p monitor?

Go into NVidia Control Panel > Manage 3D Settings > "DSR - Factors", set it to 4x > "DSR - Smoothness", set it to 0% - Then go into your Windows display setting and select 3840x2160. You'll then be able to select 2160p in games and you should get a rough idea of what performance to expect at the resolution, however it'll be a bit lower than what you'd actually get.

From personal experience, 4k wasn't really worth the drop in settings to maintain 60 FPS in my opinion, I'm much happier with a 3440x1440 monitor (GTX 980Ti).

Thanks for the responses guys I really appreciate it!
Joe, having done what you said I am very surprised at the performance having done the settings you suggested. Outlast ran smoothly at max settings, Counter strike maintained ~100fps at max settings. Even Star Wars Battlefront ran incredibly well (despite having to be put on low settings), ran at a constant 60fps.

I was thinking about a monitor upgrade for a while anyway but I think I may just get this one as it would be good for video editing as well.

Thanks for the comments!

Star Wars is very well optimised from what I have heard, so that's nice to hear. The thing is, if you are struggling with performance you can always make the game run at 1080p/1440p and leave it at that. It'd look a bit strange but oh well!

The real estate of 2160p monitors are brilliant, so I can see where you are coming from. Enjoy the purchase if you end up going for it :)
