Hi,

I'm looking for a bit of advice on upgrading my graphics card.

I have a 7850 2gb which has served me well for 2 yeara, but after playing battlefront it is really starting to struggle.

The problem i have is my funds avail (probably £200 max) i've been looking at the r9 380 msi 4gb card. Is that any good? Or should i focus else where?

System.
3570k 3.5ghz
8gb ram
600w corsair gs psu

For £180 the R9 380 is the best option, if you can stretch to £240, the R9 390 is another great option.

R9 380 4gb is about the performance level of a 7950 (obviously it has more ram though) so that would be a safe upgrade. Does your budget inc,due money you'd get for selling your old card? If not then that could be the difference between the 390 and even better performance again.

Thanks for the replies, no it doesnt include money for selling my old card. Would it be better for the 390 obviously then? How much would my old card get 50?

390 is considered the better <£250 out of the options on both sides of the fence, if your budget is £200 and that doesn't include the sale of the old card I'd definitely get the 390.

I'd say get EVGA, MSI or Gigabyte, in that order, based purely on their RMA services. Aesthetics could also be an important factor for you :p

A used 290x is something to consider too. Pretty much the same card but could save you some money if you don't mind the card having some miles on it.

If some of the dx12 bench are anything to go by, the R9 380 and GTX960 both are quite a long way behind the R9 390/390x on dx12 performance. Because of that, coming from the 7850 I would say the best bet would be to pay the extra and go for a 390 at least...it would definitely worth it extra.

Or you could as other people stated look into 2nd hand 290/290x...but for Shadow of Mordor, it is the ONE game that could actually benefit from having more than 4GB VRAM even at 1080p, so yea the 390 is definitely worth considering, as it has 8GB VRAM.

I tried Shadow of Mordor with ultra textures at 1440p with a GTX 970 and everything was fine, he will be all right no matter what he chooses. Neither card will be able to produce locked 60fps in that game maxed anyways.

If I had to choose between a used 290x or a new 390 I'd definitely grab a cheap 290x and use it till something that's not a rebrand arrives:p
