Help my Father In Law choose a BMW :)

What wasn't he sold on? If he didnt like them why would he like the 4 Series - its the same car, it drives the same, it has the same engine range, etc etc. Its like not being 'sold' on a 5 door Golf but deciding a 3 door Golf is epic.

If the budget is higher then fair enough but why struggle into a 4 Series when your budget buys a fabulous 3 Series loaded with kit?

The issue here is that the choice appears to be very average 4 Series or very good 3 Series and I cannot understand why in that situation you'd still pick the 4.

Cos he wants to look cool innit. He wants the classic all show no go x18i msport in white with 18inch black or anthracite alloys option.

No, he really doesn't. He just prefers the look of the 4 series coupe to the 3 series. It will more than likely be the last car he purchases, he has had his current 320d for 13 years.

Worth noting that at around £25-26k he could get into a brand new 420i SE/Sport via a broker (if he's happy with that engine). Another 1-2k for the M Sport however.

Which broker? I usually use drive the deal to compare but they are not listing BMW at the moment.

Why pay more when the only difference is you get less practicality? Maybe it's boring me but I despise 3 door cars. Even more so when it's not a hatchback.

I'd say the 3 series looks better than the 4 series anyway.

As above and Broadspeed very similar as well.

Currently got 9k off the 340i, which is making it very tempting, particularly with the high second hand prices as Fox mentions and also the 340i being basically a unicorn (as well as actually the 330i and 335d really).

Hadn't heard of a 340i so looked it up.... What on earth is going on with BMW model names these days? 318i is a 3 pot 1.5, 330i is a 4 cylinder 2.0 and 340i is a 3.0 I6... Weird!

Trouble is even with 9k off it still has that 1 series dash :(

I'm coming from an E92 though remember....

However, visually I do actually prefer the F20/F30 interior to the F10 as well, just something not quite right with it for me. Perhaps a bit bulky and bland.

Yeah, its basically just the 335i renamed, which is odd because they still have the 335d in the lineup. Really annoying that the 330i is a 4 pot or it could've been considered and would likely be 2-4k less than the 340i.

Why can't it be considered? It's more powerful and efficient than the previous 330i

It's not more powerful - the last 330i had 272bhp.

It's also 4 cylinder, which for the sort of person who'd have wanted a 330i may not be enough irrespective of how quick it is.
