Win 7 will upgrade to windows 10 on its own.

looks like you just need the core systems (GPU + CPU + MOBO + RAM). Maybe CPU cooler.

watch out because your audio card is PCI, not PCI-E. Some compatibility issues.

Target would be a 980ti + a Z97X-4790K / Z170-6700K / X99-5820K. It's tight though. Going to i5 leaves more room.

You do have some old DDR3 (32GB). That might work with 4790K, and saves you enough money for a cooler / SSD. Not sure about compatibility / desirability with 1600MHz memory and Devil's Canyon.

YOUR BASKET
1 x Gigabyte GeForce GTX 980Ti G1 Gaming 6144MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card £575.99
1 x Gigabyte Z97X-UD3H-BK - Devil's Canyon Core i7 4790K CPU & Motherboard Bundle **20 Saving + Gigabyte Free Upgrade ** £379.98
1 x Alpenfhn Matterhorn Black CPU Cooler £39.95
Total : £1,005.52 (includes shipping : £8.00 Ex.VAT).

That motherboard has one legacy PCI slot, so you're in luck.

Also looking at memory compatibility, some similar Kingston is listed, so shouldn't be a problem. Or sell your old memory and budget for 2400MHz 2x8GB set.

Shop around for 980ti prices. They vary quite a lot for the premium stuff (G1, ACX, DirectCU). Maybe OcUK can cut you a deal.

Going Skylake or X99, you will have to factor the RAM, and a cooler is necessary (the Asus Z170 Pro Gaming has a Dark Rock 3 bundled).

my budget is not never ending but i can stretch if that is what is needed and the sound card can go as it is old now.

Thanks so far for your advice please let me know how much i would need to stretch by to get full potential

A few points i want to make.

you NEED a SSD for a GREAT experience! adding a SSD to any system using a HDD massively improves the experience and i don't understand why almost all of the above posts missed this out. ( Running a X99 system on a HDD as per some of the above posts would be dumb no offence ) If you want to lower the cost of this build a little you can always replace the SSD with a 120GB version. You will be using your current HDD as storage anyway and the SSD for windows.

I am not to sure about your PSU and a quick google hosts some negativity so i opted for a replacement option.

Unless you are video editing or similar 8GB of ram is still more than enough, and you can always add more further down the line.

And again unless you are video editing you wont see much of a performance gain from X99 and at your buget it to me makes more sense to go for Z170 as it works out cheaper.

My only question would be if the cpu cooler would be able to fit in your case. Though i know a NH-D14 fits in that case. And i doubt the Alpenfhn Matterhorn is bigger than a NH-D14

that cooler is Size: 120x120x25mm
where as my current scythe is 25x140x140mm so im fairly confident it should fit
also i could remove the psu as i have had no issues with my current unit and would only replace on requirement

my final questions as harry i like ur build and due to recommendation i will prob change psu would i need a bigger than 550psu as i would be running 3 hdd, gfx etc ?

And my copy of windows 7 is an oem copy and im sure i got told that could only install on one computer

The reason i opted for the none G2 or GS was simply to keep it as close to budget :) and it's not a " Rubbish " unit, In fact it's a pretty damn good PSU

Compared to the G2 and GS the NEX units are subpar. Maybe rubbish was too strong a word to use, but for the sake of £2 why would you go with the inferior unit ?

From experience, EVGA's aren't Seasonic or Corsairs, but they're OK.

The GS I believe stands for Seasonic design. But that or either Leadex, it's good quality.

EVGA PSU's walk all over Corsair ones as Corsairs are pretty horrific. Seasonic are the bees knees as are Superflower but they cost a premium that some are willing to pay and some are not.
