Hi all,

Upgrade time, but can't decide which mobo to get with the following parts. Would like to say around £130/40 for it unless paying more really is a massive difference. I do want to OC the CPU but once its clocked, it will be left and used for gaming so I feel like I don't need lots of bells and whistles on the board.

Current spec: i2500k, 16gb ddr3, MSI z77a-gd65, GTX 980, haf-x

Am looking to buy the following but not sure if the mobo is sufficient??

YOUR BASKET
1 x Intel Core i7-6700K 4.0GHz (Skylake) Socket LGA1151 Processor - Retail £329.99
1 x Asus Z170 Pro Gaming Intel Z170 (Socket 1151) DDR4 ATX Motherboard £119.99
1 x Panram Ninja-V 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4 PC4-24000C15 3000MHz Dual Channel Kit - Black (PUD43000C158G2NJK) £116.99
1 x OcUK Tech Labs 240mm Extreme CPU Liquid Cooling Upgrade Bundle £57.88
- 1 x No Fan Controller Required £0.00
- 1 x Asetek Premium Retention Kit Intel LGA115X (35-150-0000014) £4.00
Total : £638.44 (includes shipping : £8.00 Ex.VAT).

As usual, thanks in advance for any help/advice :D

I am not sure I can see the need to upgrade, the 2500K just needs overclocking.

It is already OC'd to 4.5. Would I not see a decent performance increase bearing in mind the DDR4 etc as most comparisons I seen (only on forums mind) seem to think they have had a good increase. One of my other reasons is my 2500k is regularly hitting 75deg and while I know some say that's ok, it's irking me a little. I could just buy a better cooler but wheres the fun in that lol.

You reckon it would just be a waste of money?? Thanks :)

I am 90% sure its a waste of money.

Sure there has been IPC improvements over the generations,

So Ivybridge was 5-10% better clock vs clock than sandy bridge and Haswell/DC was about the same better again and again with Skylake.

That is a stronger upgrade, cheaper and it is a six core CPU

Hmm thanks Stulid, I did look at the 5820k route too yea, think I decided on the skylake route because I were attracted by the lower temps/power req etc. Is that a much better option or still not worth it against amount gained?? I can wait if need be lol, it's just been a good while since last cpu/mobo (2011) so thought it were time. Think it's safe to say the 2500k is probably the best cpu I have owned so far, it's lasted so long!

Thanks for your help sir :)

I would personally rather have the X99 than the i7 Skylake and of course you can overclock that 5820K so you have six cores running at 4Ghz+ without to much trouble in the BIOS (make sure its updated to latest BIOS).
