Hi Guys,

i just need a little help.

i installed a new 2tb WD hdd as a secondary to my ssd with the OS installed on it.

upon booting the computer up, i got the error "Disk Read Error Occured" i proceeded to take out the new hdd and try again but now my computer is stuck at "starting windows" constantly. ive tried reinstalling but i get stuck on the same screen. ive also tried an old hdd with windows installed and get stuck on the same part.

Any idea how to resolve this, ive just spent 5 hours trying everything i can think of,.

Thanks!

Sorry, but how can i do that? i seen it mentioned somewhere before but i wasnt able to find it on my bios.

i have a pretty old motherboard p7h55-m pro :(

You should be able to find the setting somewhere under " integrated peripherals " or something along those lines. It may currently be set to IDE :) You could help by taking a picture of the bios for us :)?

Hey! Managed to find it but it hasn't made any difference. Getting the same thing stuck on starting windows and then turns off 2 mins later. I've also tried reseting the bios which has had no effect

Try F8 on boot and select last know good config. IIRC there's also an option on the F8 menu to open command prompt where you can try a fix mbr.

could you try and run the repair from the windows disk\USB stick and see if this works?

when you said you have tried re installing was that windows?

Hi Maj,

ive tried the last known config and that didn't help either.

Hi Ed209, I've tried to run the windows repair but once I boot from cd I just go back to the "starting Windows" screen again and then doesn't do anything.

would this be a hardware conflict? I've tried with old blank drives and installed a new copy of windows on it and even then I get stuck on the same screen, being unable to complete the installation.

This almost sounds like something has actually gone wrong, do you have onboard video? maybe try removing the graphics card and testing that, go to the bare minimum one stick of ram etc.

If you have tried with a new HDD and removed all your current drives when installing windows then its some sort of hardware fault.
Possible Sata cable fault?

I am kinda clutching at straws here, I have had similar situations in the past and usually ended up by progress of elimination worked out it was a dodgy cable/psu but I realise as a normal user you won't have access to a big spares piles :s

If changing the SATA mode doesn't have any effect and it is happening on other drives, then it would be safe to say it looks hardware related. How many sticks of ram do you currently have installed? I would suggest taking all but one out and trying that. Other than that, I would think your MB is playing up. Long shot, but do you have another you could try?

hey!

I can load any of the installed windows in safe mode absolutely fine, its just the normal boot.

I'm at work now, so I will try later taking away all of the components apart from 1 stick of ram and internal gfx hopefully that works.

I have a feeling you may be right about the motherboard, when I was changing boot priority etc it was taking 20+ seconds for the save to take effect and reboot the computer.

Thanks guys for this, really appreciate the help

oh my, what an evening!

I removed all ram sticks bar one.. and tried to boot up and it worked perfectly.. i finalized the windows installation, turned the comp off and put the ram back in and it works fine..

what the hell? no idea why it caused such a big f-up when i checked to make sure they were all in properly yesterday!

Thanks a lot for all your help guys, really appreciated "internet hug"
