New/Old Tablet?

I'm thinking of replacing my iPad 3 with and Android tablet as I used to require a specific iOS app that has finally been introduced to Android so I have no need to get another overpriced iPad.

Anyway... I'm not looking to spend massive money but I don't want something that will be rubbish and outdate instantly. That said I like the look of the 2013 Nexus 7 which can be had very cheap. I don't really want to push the boat out for a newer Nexus, but is the 7 to old? It's still got a decent spec and will run Marshmallow. I'm not keen on the idea of a branded one such as the rainforest one of the Hudl. Spec wise they don't look that great and I would rather have just plain Android less the branding etc.

Am I mad to get a Nexus 7? What else similar is there?

Thanks in advance.

Similar spec wise or size wise? I have the LG G Pad 8.3 which is around same age and spec, just has a bigger screen hence the name. Both have 2GB ram and a Snapdragon quad-core cpu so not the quickest but not the slowest out there either. Both have same resolution but Nexus has slightly higher dpi.

If you want to stick to 7" the only one I can think of is the Linx but that's windows OS.

Also with the Nexus you have to bare in mind that despite it being Android, it doesn't have expandable storage like others. You are stuck with the memory size you buy.

Sorry, I should have added. I'm not really bothered about storage, 16gb is plenty. 7" - 10" screen is fine also.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Cheers

Nexus 7 2013 will get Marshmellow and that will be it - no further official updates (although I'm sure there will be a custom rom available e.g. via xda)

The Hudl2 is decent enough spec wise (Basically on par with Nexus 7), and the branding is easily dealt with by installing google now launcher.

Big win for the hudl is if you shop at tesco you can use your clubcard vouchers and "double them up".

Thanks for that. I had looked at the first gen Hudl and not been that impressed. The 2 looks very good for the money. I was looking at refurbed nexus 7 for about £85 but I think the Hudl might be worth the extra few quid.

Hudl stock has completely disappeared?! Anyone know what happened to them?

I have £50 of high street vouchers free from my electric company, I might put them and the £120 I got for my old ipad towards a Nexus 9? Shouldn't need to put in much of my own cash to get one.

I managed to get a Nexus 9 for £134 through the combination of Argos, Top Cash Back and Bespoke Offers.

Same here. Though the cashback offer has dropped from 18% to 1%, so it'll be around £165 for the Nexus 9, provided the argos deal is still on and bespoke offers still finds the same deal.

I've had a nexus 7 before too though, and the 9 is much better. For me also the 7 is just too small.

I had a Hudl 1 and only the camera let it down It could barely read barcodes! Though I only used it for light browsing no games. Hudl 2 was much better.

Reading around, seems like the Hudl "division" has been scrapped, with no sign of a future Hudl 3. I guess existing stock has simply run out. I would assume that despite good sales, it was a low margin item (because it was cheap but the spec was high) and has simply been axed.

Shame, as I was looking at getting my Son one for Christmas, and none of the other options (Nexus7 2013 - too old, Nexus 9 - too expensive, Asus/Acer/Lenovo - poor support) are particularly appealing.

Ended up with a Nexus 9 today in the end, very impressed to far. I have a Nexus 5 already so it's nice to have marshmallow on both. Shame about the hudl, though I'm guessing if they are stopping selling them, updates are going to pretty much stop too?
