Which tyre ?

michelin pilot super sports are coming in at 121.63 each on tyre shopper so I think that pretty much rules them out unless they last an extra 10k miles per tyre :p

Coming to this point of the year, Uniroyal Rainsport 3's would and are my current choice.

Can we please stop with the Uniroyal love? They are a mid range tyre not a UHP tyre and do not perform as well as other UHP tyres.

Here they are coming 5th in a test of midrange tyres (Mostly, not sure why there is a CS5 in this test but no surprise to see it win against a load of midrange tyres):

http://www.tyrereviews.co.uk/Article/2015-AMS-Performance-Tyre-Test.htm

The Uniroyal is a good tyre but it's a midrange tyre designed for the smaller tyre sizes.

Wow you really don't like the Uniroyals do you, just because you don't like them we can't recommend them? He asked for other options, I personally have used the Uniroyal RS2 and now 3 on a mixture of my cars and I'm currently running them in 19" and to me are the best tyre I've used after going through a lot of the 'higher performance' ones.

Eh? so we cant discuss actual experiences? I have driven plenty on them , in the exact size (other brands that he has not listed to consider, his words) on smooth, rutted and awful surfaces (including wet, dry, cold and warm track days. This goes for Michelin, Continental, Pirelli and Uniroyal), in deluges and on sunny days.

But OK, Get Contis and be done with it.. Dunno why, but they are expensive so they must be good (and some site, which may or may not have an agenda says so).

I use that tyre size on my Golf GTI and had CS5s but found they weared really quick compared to the Avons on there before. I've just changed to Pirelli PZero Rossos which were about £100 a corner and seem to be same grip/road noise but can't comment on wear just yet.

My 2 cents worth... I have went with Uniroyal Rainspot 3 and in real world situations they have never let my down. Left me feeling very impressed.

However that's a pretty good price on the "contact 5's" I would go with them its a hell of tyre going by all the reviews, never had them on maybe next time :)

Pilot Super Sports are pretty noisy, but seem to last very well. My experience is that, generally speaking, Michelin tyres seem to wear exceptionally well. My experience with Contis is what while they're great performers they are soft and wear out quickly, but I've not used them since the SC3 so I can't speak of the SC5.

As per my above comment - be interested to see if you experience the same wet weather drop off once they get to between 3 and 4mm remaining. Had the same thing on 2 1/2 sets of them, so didn't seem to be isolated (2 different suppliers/fitters).

Just curious, but what tyres at similar tread are you comparing it too? The tyre has lost roughly 50% of its tread depth so will be significantly worse in the wet.

On my current car - nothing until my PS3's get worn down, but on other cars I haven't noticed such a severe drop off -

yes performance gets worse, but with Dunlops and Contis I had on a Cooper S, it only started to be noticable when you got to the 2mm mark (i.e. just above legal limit, where manufacturers recommend changing anyway).

The PZero Rossos gave me absolutely no confidence on even a damp road when worn to 3mm - it was like driving on ice, yet the dry performance was unaffected.

Pzeros are awful on cold mornings when called into an emergency brake or steer situation, aquaplaning in standing water below half worn was worrying.

How dare someone actually recommend tyres that they've used, the sheer audacity of it!

Nothing wrong with recommending something you like but the issue with tyres is that subjective user opinion is just that - subjective user opinion. Usually we've nothing to directly compare with, just a memory of what an older tyre was like, normally just about when it needs replacing.

Combine this with the fact the RS3 is clearly a midrange tyre - its priced like one, it's pitched against other midrange tyres in magazine tyre tests, etc etc and you get the reason why it's probably not the best choice of tyre for somebody who has listed a bunch of UHP tyres - all of which offer better performance. Even Uniroyal themselves do not market it as a UHP tyre and do not appear to offer a UHP tyre in the product range.

As a midrange tyre recommendation, a competitor to something like a Goodyear Efficientgrip for example (Also listed in that test), the RS3 is a sensible and reasonable suggestion. However it just isn't the same type of tyre as those in his list.

I had Vredstein Ultac Sessantas on my 335d and they were really good. Good grip, good feel, low enough noise levels, and great in the wet. I also sold them still with over 5mm on each tyre after 16,000 miles on them, so if you are wanting longevity from a tyre, they are worth considering.

The Goodyear Excellence on my 530d have also done 36k and have loads of life left on them too (I am talking about the two that didn't blow out because of dodgy alignment here as I mentioned in another thread, but even they had over 5mm across the tread, just not on the edges). I'm not even sure how that's possible, but it is true. So they would be worth a look too. I have not had any issue with them either, but then they are on a big, heavy estate diesel. Not a big heavy petrol hatchback.

As for tyre suppliers, I always check camskill, pneus online and love tyres along with the usual suspects you have mentioned. You then just need to find someone to fit them for you, but that isn't usually much more than around £15 a corner.

I would rate RS3's higher than some of those mentioned. No reason to complain that several people have used them and prefer them over other more expensive models, remember higher price doesn't always mean higher quality.

Of course it doesn't, but in the linked test for example the ContiSport Contact 5 (I've no idea why this tyre was featured in the test, seems bizarre given the other tyres) outbraked the Rainsport by half a car length in the wet, which is supposed to be the strong point of the Rainsport 3.

Presumably the reason why there isn't a UHP UniRoyal tyre is because Uniroyal is a brand sold by Continental who feel the Contisport brand occupies the UHP space.

I'm not saying it's a bad tyre. Far from it. Just that it isn't really a CS5, F1A2 or Pilot Super Sport alternative (and neither is it designed to be!).
