MSI R9 290X too hot ?

OK :)...I had it running last week and was getting 80c with 80% fan speed while on BF4

A lot of us that had the MSI Twin Frozer IV Hawaii cards got bad ones, The problem was they recycled the shroud and heatsink, It was too thin and completely unsuitable for dealing with the heat the chip pumps out. Mine would hit 94 whenever I gamed, I stuck a 1 for 1 fan profile on it and it still sat in the high 80's with a loud 80% fan speed..

The cards sucked and I am always very surprised when I hear people with the same card saying they get temps in the 60 to 70 degree region. Just look at the back half of the heat sink, What is it 4 or 5 mm's thick? What a joke. I had the identical MSI 4gb 770 gaming not long before my 290x gaming and it was identical. Same size, same weight, same everything.

I was really disappointed with MSI for that and intend to avoid them because of it. They may of fixed it for Grenada but it does not make up for not bothering with Hawaii. I used to gravitate towards MSI but for doing that no more. When I spend close to 400 quid on a card I expect it to be developed around what it is. Not buy a flagship card that has unsuitable recycled bit's on it. But I'm not bitter :D

My MSI 290X Lightning only reaches 65C even when overclocked to 1100 (stock volts), i did re-paste it with Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut which dropped temps by about 5C. Fan speed reaches about 45%.

In fairness, several of the major companies didn't really make an effort, either with Hawaii or Grenada. Asus' 290(X) was an abomination, since they literally just slapped a 780 cooler on there (and then did it again for Grenada). MSI's cooler looks the same on the surface, but underneath it was actually fully customised for Hawaii.

They put the effort in, but the heatsink just wasn't beefy enough (which they solved by moving to 2.5 slots for Grenada).
