Astronomers may have found Aliens

I think concrete proof of other life in the universe would really do the planet a favour. The crazies would have to accept that we're not "special" and hopefully that would put paid to a lot of religious nonsense. Humanity might actually begin to advance in the right direction.

I loved Ringworld so the possibility of a Niven Ring or a Dyson Sphere or Swarm is awesome. :D

actually I guess that until we started using radio etc.. we were less likely to be discovered and I guess to any possible aliens greater than say 100 or so lightyears away we might well still be

It all seems a bit far fetched but cool none the less. Its a shame Ill be long dead and buried when the human race does actually find something. Although we will probably be extinct by then :(

Could do the complete opposite, 'God' might have been some Dilbert trainee geneticist who just stopped over to clean out his failed experiments on this planet for a bit of lark before going home. Next thing you know the intergalactic version of a hazmat team turn up to disinfect this planet of the infestation of nasty petty war like idiots 'us'. And as the cleansing begins all the religious zealots claim it's the long predicted end of days.

I, for one, welcome our new genocidal alien overlords.

Deep Space Nine.

The Humaaans will come, and they will purchase our Dilithium crystals with their plastic currency!

TBH, considering we found them before they found us, they had better hope they have no oil :P

How do you know they haven't found us? Assuming they are a they, and not a complex natural formation of local space bodies/debris?

If they are that advanced, they will know we exist, but will ignore us, as we are cavemen to them

To those people stating that 'they' would've contacted us by now if they were real, how do you know they didn't spot Earth ages ago and sent us a message then? If that message arrived more than 100 years ao then chances are basically nil that we'd have even noticed it.

I think I'll wait and see how this one plays out though. Every other "it's aliens!" story has amounted to nothing s I'm not too hopeful about this one. :)

Isn't that the plot of Prometheus? (sort of:D)

To be fair, the main reason we have spotted it is because of the anomalous behaviour; our planet's / sun's behaviour isn't. and it certainly wasn't 1840 years ago which is the time scale for light from our sun reaching them.
We will have advanced another 2 millennia if they spot us "now"

So we're better of focusing on our own problems :p As Narj said though once we head in the right direction, huge progress will be made like never before.

Well lets say we have been broadcasting radio waves for a nice round figure of 100 years - if the radio waves travelled at the speed of light they aren't going to notice us for over 1000 years and then its another 1000 and something years for war rocket ajax to get here

good thing for us is we can now point our SETI stuff at them because if they are a few thousand years ahead of us in development they are bound to be using some sort of radio wave transmission so we will see them first

Exactly. That and we haven't always been broadcasting radiowaves out there.

NASA is just trying to get a budget increase.

Personally I think the day we truely find life out there it will be hushed up so as not to cause panic.

Im 99.99% it won't be aliens but I really wish it is.

Then everyone will go into a "this could be our last night on earth!" meltdown and all the women that turned me down over the years will let me bang 'em.

Right?
